hey nowi hate to keep beating this dead horse acetylene price thing but i actually was told a solid number for rise in price and was told when the facility was going to be running again that makes this stuff...according to my lws acetylene is gonna up $2 a refill for b-tanks. i didnt ask about bigger sizes because i dont need anything bigger. he got a letter in the mail from the acetylene manufacturer or the supplier that gets the acetylene then brings it to the lws (however it works). according to his information, it could either be 10 days till 1 year till things are back to normal pricing.the grand ol' opry aint so grand anymoremiller maxstar 150sworking on an oxy/acet set up

Reply:I have been hearing something similar, though in he area that I am in acetylene is not going to be available in the quantities that my employer (a welding school) needs so we are switching to propylene. I don't know if this will work or not.

(look at the bill of your acetylene and think about switching to propane) or do you not look to save your sanity? (say the hell with the price, just fill it)

Reply:I got a legit question. How is the acetylene hauled from the manufacturers to fill stations? Is it hauled in a tanker like propane? or individual cylinders and hauled that way to the LWS? If it is hauled in a tanker, how do they overcome the acetone situation?
Reply:I would think all gas is hauled in tractor trailer sized cylinder or cylinders but im speaking on helium knowledge. Usually when it comes in small bottles its cause your down the food chain. Couldnt tell you how it applies to acetylene though.wikiSafety and handlingAcetylene is not especially toxic but when generated from calcium carbide it can contain toxic impurities such as traces of phosphine and arsine. It is also highly flammable (hence its use in welding). Its singular hazard is associated with its intrinsic instability, especially when it is pressurized. Samples of concentrated or pure acetylene can easily react in an addition-type reaction to form a number of products, typically benzene and/or vinylacetylene. This reaction is exothermic. Consequently, acetylene can explode with extreme violence if the pressure of the gas exceeds about 200 kPa (29 psi) as a gas[16] or when in liquid or solid form. It is therefore shipped and stored dissolved in acetone or dimethylformamide (DMF), contained in a metal cylinder with a porous filling (Agamassan), which renders it safe to transport and use, given proper handling.once they have handling methods size is a matter of fact kinda thing.Last edited by Teljkon; 04-15-2011 at 12:33 PM. |
