Quickie Log Burner

Just knocked this up yesterday from an old gas bottle,Done in a hurry but still looks and performs OK.Plasma cut door and flame shapes,Did not bother with any air vents or grate ,as it is intended for wood only.Cut down a T hinge,Drilled it 12mm and plug welded to look like rivets.Hand formed short tube and welded it to the top so the flue is detachable.Don't take any notice of the smoke in the first picture,it's just the high temp paint solvent burning off,I think the cut-outs in the door are quite nice when the flames are dancing about. Reply:That really looks good. Would make a good burner for a deck, patio as DSW stated or possibly a small building. I have a full appreciation of heating in England, lived there 10 years. Reply:I might be tempted to tack on some expanded metal on the back of the door to intercept the sparks.Otherwise, an interesting idea.Cutting into a propane tank would make me a bit nervous even if it had been open for some time. What technique did you use for the initial cut?
Reply:I have cut into quite a few gas bottles, My procedure is to remove the valve and fill with water and then leave for a couple of hours, Then leave upside down to drain,Finally just before cutting I purge with 100psi compressed air for a couple of minutes.Never ever had even the slightest hint there was any remaining gas fumes,To be even more safe you could always leave the air purge line blowing while you make the initial cut.I have built more complicated burners before with air regulators,sealed doors and ash pans etc, but this one is purely for outdoor use and only took a couple of hours to make.The three feet are cut from the raised collar that protects normally protects the valve.Last edited by gordon stephenson; 11-12-2011 at 09:04 AM.Reason: additional infoLincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
Reply:Great recycle job on an old tank and I really like the door. I'm sure someone is saying " Now where did I put that old tank?".
