Reply:I'd let you weld on any of my tanks.  That assumes that you can do similar on stainless.
Reply:Have always been taught that unless you are welding thin guage metals, downhand is next  to useless and not worth dinking around on anything thicker than a 1/8 of an inch.  Your vertical up is ok, not pausing enough on the outsides, try doing this to get a nice even bead with good penetration:weave from side to side, when you are on one side(say half a rod width to a full from center// depending on the thickness of the material) pause for a second then scoot over to the other side slowly moving up say half a rod width then pause on that side for a second then scoot over to the other side whilst moving up and pause on that side for a second.  You will get a nice bead if done properly, good penetration.  Don't worry about stopping in the middle, when you hold on the sides, your puddle will flow into the middle.

Reply:It's bloody hard, but practice practice practice, mine is finally starting to get really good, Have been welding for over ten years on and off and have never really needed to do it, but the shop I am apprenticing in mainly does mobile repairs, so when you are working on farm machinery, there is no flippinf it on its side lol.  But if you can do vertical up decent I don't think you can make a mig welded vertical up look as pretty as arc. Were you doing the 7018 dc reverse polarity?  I would, welds so nice. P.S. looks like your 7018 vertical up pass may have been a little warm.Try that technique I told you, don't look at the at the puddle going down, try to ignore it when you are welding, just concentrate on pausing at the sides and scooting across the middle.  You will have balls of slag haninging off of it when you are done like tear drops but once you knock it off you will be surprised what you see underneath!
Reply:well 7018 dc is a straight polarity rod when ran on reverse it seems not to get in as deep as it is suppose to you'll get more build up on the bead and not enough penetration from what ive seen . on the warm side it probably was i was doing 125 amp on a 1/8 rod which it is with in the parameters of the rod but it was only 1/4 plate but thanks for the tip ever since i got my suitcase i got kinda spoiled and ive had a bunch of work lately where i havent need to run stick so im just way out of practice.Lincoln Power Arc 4000 Thermal Arc Fabricator 252 iThermal arc 186Thermal Arc 26 tigTweeko 200 amp spool gunHobart AirForce 400WP-17V-12R
