what procedure and stick welding electrodes would you gents recommend for welding 3/4" 4140 plate to 2" diameter 4140 round stock (fillet welds)? thanks
Reply:I'd use 11018. Bout as strong as they come! Kind of expensive though.
Reply:It's hard to make a recommendation without more info, but:You will definitely need preheat and possibly PWHT as well.8018-B2 is the recommended electrode, but 7018 can be used if it is desired to under-match strength. Can your client provide a WPS?JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:no wps provided as of yet.
Reply:I think Siilcon Based is pretty close if your trying to keep it basic or not go to extremes.     They do make a 4140 welding rod though.    I used 7018 to weld a foot and a half long solid 1 1/2 square stock of 4140 to the side of a 5" long piece of 1 1/2  stock.   What happened is, my ditch witch had a inch and a half piece of stock that stuck out the back of the machine. The digging boom is a 2" piece of .250 wall sq. tubing that slid over the 1.5" stub.   The boom was 3 feet long w/ sprockets on it for the digging chain.   The machine was old and abused and the original square stock snapped while digging, leaving the entire boom laying on the ground.    You got the picture.   Anyway, I Veed out a 5" portion of the new 4140 stock and welded it to the side of the old stock.   So now I could slip the boom over a new piece of stock.    I used 7018, bought some temp sticks, and literally post heated it for hours slowly bringing down the temp. after welding.   I remember using a whole bottle of acetylene on it for heating.    I then buried it in cat litter a couple hours after post heating.    I ran it for years, after that, through all kinds of abuse till I sold it a couple years ago.   Never had a crack or problem.   That was back in the early 90s, and I dont remeber the specifics on the temps I kept it at.   But I do remeber that bringing the temp down slow, very slow after welding it.
