Hi everyone! I've been a lurker for a while but now I'm getting my feet with with a homemade log splitter. My problem is while I've got a torch and full tanks of Oxy/Acet, buying steel isn't so simple. I called around today and found an 8 foot long 5-1/4" x 8" I beam for 230.00 at W and W, but for a sheet of 3/8 inch steel it was 530.00!!!Do you guys in the OKC area have any place you're partial to for small stuff? I need little pieces, like 10x12", 5x8", etc so any sheet stuff I'll be cutting up.
Reply:Lurker here too. I am up in Bartlesville, so I don't know OKC's metal places but up here I ask for drop.  We have a couple steel yards here and one of them charges about 30 cents a pound for leftover steel from projects. Sometimes I can get pretty good sized sheets, like a 4'x6'.  Look for steel yards that also manufacture stuff.
Reply:I'm in MWC and normaly get my steel from either standard steel or standard iron. there across the street from each other on Reno west of eastern. standard iron sells scrap/drops for .30 a pound.  I've been told there is a place in Shawnee that's pretty reasonable but I can never remember the name. also if your close to MWC there is a place called tisdells that refills oxy/ace at great prices

Reply:is it weird that the only posters are first time posters?
Reply:Nah, OK people are a quiet people. I'd still be lurking if I didnt need the local help.
Reply:I go to one of those Standards (the one on the north side of Reno) to see what they have every once in a while.  When I was there about a month ago they had a lot of plate.  The few times that I've bought new I went to Quiksteel on SE 44th/Bryant.  Quiksteel probably is any cheaper than anywhere else but they're close to me
Reply:Standard Iron is piles upon piles on the ground.  Standard Steel is a retail yard.  I usually go to Ray Albright, at 15th SW and May, for my retail needs.  WW was not even interested in talking to me the one time I went there--there was a guy sitting at his desk, and when I asked for help, he said it was his lunch break and told me to come back in an hour.  I didn't bother.Hobart cutting/welding torch.MM252, and nothing else.  My first welder.  Buy once, cry once....but I really would like a nice 50/60A circuit to run it at full strength.A bunch of ideas, and not enough time and money to bring them to life.
Reply:I ended up going to Standard Iron for some plate. Those guys are rude as heck except for the little guy that weighs the trucks. Seems he was the only one working there. I probably wont go back. I got some tubing from Standard Steel across the street though and they were great. Thanks for all the advice guys! I'll be splitting logs in a few weeks, or burning down my house LOL
