What are the upsides/downsides of a flat bed trailer with a fifth wheel type hitch as opposed to a goose neck ball hitch? Is a goose neck stronger? More flexible? I see mainly goose necks pulling loads and fifth wheels on semis and RV's. Is one type better for certain applications? Why?A man needs to know his limitations!
Reply:I always was under the impression that the goose neck was stronger, but you have to have the giant goose neck hitch in your bed... where a fifth wheel is strong enough for the weight a 3/4-1 ton can tow and you don't have to have the giant hitch in your bed.
Reply:I was told once that one was primarily AG related, the other more for recreational and highway use. I don't know how true that is though. My name's not Jim....
Reply:Gooseneck= Off Road/rough road conditions- that's why you see them on Horse Trailers/ Ranch trailers.5th wheel= mostly over the road, take an off camber road and you risk hitting the bed rails.Weight capacity, they're equal.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:I have never seen a gooseneck hitch rated for over 30,000 lbs. A kingpin on a fifth wheel is much stronger.Miller Pro 30068 SA 20064 SAF 300305 G Lincoln gasserMiller 210

Reply:Thanks for the replies. That's all pretty much what I thought. I have had several fifth wheel trailers but never a goose neck, so I wasn't sure if I was missing anything. When you look up trailer plans they typically list only goose necks and not fifth wheels.A man needs to know his limitations!
