not sure where to post this but i have a smallproject i need some tig work done on and i need an experienced welder to do it...all jokes aside and amateurs too...this is a firearm frame i need some tig work done for and it's mainly for cosmetics and finish but it is a firearm and not to be taken lightly...anyone know of a good tig man in or around Gainesville, GA that could do the work?thanks...corey
Reply:If Chattanooga isn't to far I just might be your man. I like guns and I'm a pretty good tig hand most definately.
Reply:Hey Showdog,Just some "food-for-thought" from a retired Master Gunsmith. In the 33yrs I did 'smithing, I NEVER welded on any firearm. Even for cosmetics, you may be a prime candidate for a lawsuit regarding ANY liability that may occur, even IF the weld repair wasn't at fault. A lawyer has to simply say that the welding altered the firearms' metallurgical properties & your repair was the cause. And, know what? He'd win because you did exactly that. A little fodder to contemplate.....DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. ShopMobile UnitFinally retired*Moderator*"A man's word is his honor...without honor there is nothing.""Words are like bullets.... Reply:Hey vinnie,There is nothing detrimental with that video. That particular part is a trigger floorplate for a double barrel shotgun & has nothing to do with the integrity of the frame. If you re-read the OP's posting, he clearly states he needs the FRAME welded..... HUGE difference in liability. Any small part of a firearm that has nothing to do with the structural integrity of the frame can be repaired via TIG, MIG, O/A w/steel filler or sil-sol. Don't base an assumption from a video that any kind of welding can be done on a firearm frame. The manufacturers seldom weld a frame if at all. Just some info from past experiences reading firearm lawsuits.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:denny...so caspian, wilson, nighthawk, ed brown, etc...none of them do welding for any part of their frames?...just curious as im sure the 1911 market is full of house builds and full customs that have had some type of brazing, soldering, welding done...mine is a 1911 officer and it's edge build up i need, not structural nor functional welding...thanks for looking out for us but i think i'll stick to what i know and trust the 'smiths and builders that pioneered custom 1911's that sell by the thousands...
Reply:Hey railin,I'm sure you are correct regarding the work/welding that Caspian/Wilson, etc. do on the frames they mfg./modify/sell. And, I'm also sure that their LIABILITY insurance is in the millions. Why don't you just send your frame to one of them for the repair you need?  Their price maybe?????  You think you can just come to a forum & ask a weldor who has never welded on a firearm frame to do your work & then if an issue arises, you can send the lawsuit lawyers to the weldor who did the job? You think a weldor has liability insurance for firearm repairs? It is irrelevent to me who chooses to do your job..... I'm just passing on information for ANY weldor to contemplate.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Hey vinnie,My response wasn't, in any way, meant to sound castigating. Being in the business for 33yrs, & never once, having an issue with the BATF or a lawsuit, would do anything to jeopardize everything I own. I had many customers bring in "fixes" because they, or someone else botched up a firearm & wanted me to fix it. Nope..... wouldn't do it & explained to the customer why. I saw many fine firearms virtually ruined by some of the hacks who called themselves "'smiths". Back in '70, when I started, the events of lawsuits were negligible against 'smiths, & as time progressed, seems the lawsuits were a fad that escalated into where it is today. Remember the "McDonalds' Coffee Lawsuit"? $3M. Anyway, I hope you can find a qualified person/operation that can do your repair with the utmost care.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Denny I agreeVinnie
Reply:I offered and got not so much as a reply. Good luck getting your stuff welded.
Reply:On that video from Midway, it looked like that part was repaired in the same place at least once before.  Seems like a design flaw to me.
