This one came in for me to raise the hitch height.  Customer said it was ok for me to remove some of the crappy welds and replace them.I am going to arc air off the sh*t and replace with better.  I think I am going to attach the hitch to the I beam.  What do you think of the pictures.   I forgot my camera home so  these are cell phone.More later today when I finish the jobDavidLast edited by David R; 11-08-2011 at 09:57 AM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Definitely in need of a welder. I've quit using my camera for everything. These cell phones are getting better all the time for photos. I can send the photos directly to my computer w/o having to hard wire it too, making it a little simpler to use.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:First I "unwleded" it with 5/32 carbon and 295 amps.  Then I cleaned em up with a grinderAnd started putting them back together.   First welds were 1/8" 7018 @ 135 amps, welder on Soft arc force in the middle.First pass on the wedge 1/8 7018 H4R 145 ampsThen I cranked it up to 195 amps and 5/32 7024    Love it!Need a hitch height from my customer to finish the job.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Im glad he say it was "OK" for you to put good welds on it.Last edited by tenpins; 11-08-2011 at 01:10 PM.Weldanpower 225 G7Ironworkers Local #24
Reply:How much higher does he want the hitch? seems it would interfear with the split logs as they get pushed through if you don't had additional wedging to make the logs go around the hitch. There are no problems. Reply:I had the welder on a 40 amp circuit.  It blew the breaker twice.    I can not gouge with a plasma.  Does that make me an old codger?  I have a demand meter, so I don't go more than I have to.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:The latch on that hitch will be gone first use; just like the one that was on it before. Nice work..... 100% better than it was, not sure I would even call those crappy welds..... maybe just crappy.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
Reply:I would add some more plate to the back of that wedge to insure that it pushes the wood out enough to not interfere with the hitch. otherwise, nice work. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:as the others said, i saw no crappy welds. no welds at all. just some lumps of what may have been some type of rod at one time. i would add some 2"X1/4" vertical angle iron spreaders to the wedge to save the hitch. will also make the splitter much more efficient. nice job on the rework David.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:Spreaders welded to the sides of that wedge. Definitely!!  Bob
Reply:You folks are correct.  Spreaders on the wedge would be a good thing.   I cold have added a gusset or filled in the triangle spot I left open too.  It would have made the hitch stronger.   The whole splitter only weighs a few hundred pounds. My dad had the patent on the moving spreaders on wood splitters.  He came up with it in the mid 70s when we had the big energy crisis.  Some jobs have to be done in "the spirit of the machine"    Thank you for all the comments.   I'll be posting more jobs.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:A few pics of my home built splitter....as it is in the pics it is about 5 seasons old...only used for my home heating wood, as well as when friends borrow it for theirs! It has probably done about 30 cord or so of oak, maple, birch...and some other junk!Unique:  The main beam is also the fluid tank, electric start 11hp briggs from a discarded lawn tractor at the dump, wheels from the same rig. Log shelf with my name.....so my friends remember where it came from!  All parts cut with plasma....welded mostly with a HH210 (Hobart low cost/low duty cycle Mig)  Welds are not the prettiest (was teaching my step son to weld at the time!) but noting has ever broken. The ram bent after the second year (is 1" thick)....so was gussetted after that.  The wedge is 3/4", with 3/8" wings with internal gussets. Reply:Customer had more spots to weld, so we did and I asked if we could add wings to the wedge to protect the hitch.   He said sure.  My son did the welding on a V155S with 3/32 7018 @ 80 amps.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:You guys must have little wood, with that splitter so high in the air

Reply:Only sufficient hitch of higher is needed. So, you should maintain that hitch. It is recommended to not work with the machine on the ground. This is not only an uncomfortable working position but it can also be dangerous because the operator has to bring his/her face close to the machine, and thus risks being struck by chips or debris.Log Splitter Ireland
