My employer insists on hiring foreign detailing companies. He seems to think he is saving the company a few bucks. I am now in IT here, as well as document management. I sometimes review RFI's and try to resolve instead of sending to the people that answer RFI's and do the approvals. It is so frustrating when you explain something to the detailer, in response to his questions, and get back the opposite of what you tell him. I so want to say "WTF, are you people a bunch of morons?" But- alas, I can't. Ok, Rant over !

Reply:I think Mumbai is where the foreign detailers are located !
Reply:That is like trying to detail bridges with autocad and tecla it does not work. Try and do a curved tub girder , it will not work. Camber and sweep ,loaded and unloaded conditions conditions require propratory detail programs to create shop details.
Reply:Shovelon- A raise? you gotta be kidding pavinsteelman- I believe they use Tekla. Their original question was whether to attach an angle, 8'-9" to the bottom of a stair. My response was no. They sent back revised drawings with the angle welded to the stair. I thought like WTF is wrong with these people.
Reply:detailing is one of the biggest pains in the *** of the business. A good detailer can make you a fortune a bad one can cost you everything. theres no school for detailers. Draftsmen yes but they are not detailers. I have been exsposed to one job that was farmed out to a phillapine detailing house. It wasnt to bad but i would much rather have a local detailer do my work then i know where to find a guy to blameVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I'm a contractor, plain truth is that nobody wants to spend the time and money on details, not the owners, not the architects, the engineers cover it all in generic details sheets and leave it up to the contractor to figure out what applies and where. Too many young people (and I'm one of them unfortunately, but at least I understand construction) with no construction background get a degree in architecture or engineering and only really understand how to use the drafting software, they do not understand how things need to be constructed in the real world and it shows up in the poor vague detailing, then they really get confused and defensive when you tell them their drawings aren't worth wiping your azz with and you politely try to explain to them what they need to provide you.
Reply:^nailed it. half of these drawings are just cut and paste from other jobs sized to fit the lot. Cad is a good thing and bad thing. But its lead to not having any real connection with what they are designingVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:They don't know what they are designing half the time, they do a floor plan and just cut and paste details they think should work, I've seen architectural details call for 1200lbs of steel angle to be used to support 100lbs of 1/2" plywood roof blocking, when I asked the guy who drew it why we needed such heavy angle he had no idea all it was there to do was keep the wind from blowing the plywood off, I ended up using 12ga designed for the application, not the 3/8" angle we could have set precast on.And the omissions have gotten unreal, I put a big addition on a building and the tie in details between the two were missing entirely, when I asked them what they wanted to do with the 1ft gap between the buildings where I could see day light all around, it took them 3 months to get me an answer with weekly reminders and suggestions. They could not wrap their heads around an easy solution, not to mention they had to cover their own tail so they didn't end up paying for it. I think these guys should be required to work in the trades for a few years before they can be drawing.

Reply:foreign detailers? like from what country. since i am pretty sure we are not talking about first and third angle projection then we must be talking about the QUALITY of work by foreign detailers. that is something i have come across quite a bit. here are some stands i was asked to quote not long ago. i wont even bother with the stuff that was on the roof. don't know if the dimensions will be clear but my first heads up was that 3 by 3 sq tube x brace that connects to the 4 x 4 post. hmm Last edited by ncountyline; 10-04-2013 at 08:31 PM.
Reply:thats looks about right for engineers these days. my new fave is a 1/2" fillet weld on a 1/4" tube to 1/4" base plateSecond runner up is dualing details for connections at the end of the same beam that called it a w-8 on one end and a w-14 on the otherVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches. |
