Reply:If you truly want to be a welder, check into the Hobart, and Lincoln welding schools. I've read bad things about the Tulsa Welding Schools. Don't know how true it is though! Once you're out of school go to work in a fab shop for a couple years to learn how to fabricate, then you should be able to write your own ticket. In no time you'll be making 6 figures! Reply:First of all, I agree with those about finishing high school first.  Get your dipoma, then if you want to weld IMO I would seek out further education, either through the companies or vo-tech classes.  I hadn't welded for the better part of 30 years, and knew nothing about mig or tig machines.  So I took a couple classes at the local vo-tech and bought a mig machine which is super fun to run.  It seems additional education in some form will help, but the decision is yours to make. Good Luck to ya.
Reply:Maybe you could hire on as a welder's helper this coming summer. You'll get a feel for the work and you can learn a lot if you keep your eyes open. May go a long way to helping you decide if you want to do it for a career. If you don't like it you can move on to something else, if you do like it you'll be a step further down the road.
Reply:Thanks I had just been reading about carbon arc welding in a Forney Arc Welding Manual and thought it was neat.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:This seems like it's going to lead into my thread about youth and employment which, I recommend you look at lots of advice. If I were you i would ask you high school counselor if they have an adult school close by and see if they have a summer welding program like what I took and get a small taste and try it they should also give you some graduation credits to then see if you want to be a welder. I want you to know though finish high school at ALL COSTS reason I say this is even McDonalds wont let you work their without a diploma so its a NECESSARY building block in life and it will make it easier to get into college also about your grammar its okay to mess up a little but at least try and I'm sure this is full of errors but I tried and on that note good luck. Reply:Why wait till after high school? I'm currently in High School and I take a night class 1 day of the week, just trying to get my foot in the door. Go to a local trade school or community college ask around about taking a welding course. I'll be honest with you... 6 or 7 months ago when I wanted to try welding out at trade school I was lost. I had no idea what to ask, where to go, who to ask, but I guess I somehow found my way around. It's good you want to get into the trades, if you plan on doing that after high school get ready for some snobby remarks from "sophisticated students" who are going to a 4-year university. The teachers don't look at me the same when they find out I want to get in the trades after high school.

Reply:I think the glut of college grads (with white collar degrees without jobs) will eventually get people to understand college is not the only way.As a math teacher I correct other teachers who look down on people without degrees. I didn't go till my 30's.If pros are telling you school will help in the welding field then consider it. Reply:Any education one gets is great to have. But white collar jobs have so much more competition now a days. Look how many college grads are working at Burger King! Personally I'd rather get dirty, and make $40.00 + an hour. Reply:I know a guy with two masters degrees that worked his last 20 years before retirement as a maint/janitor.Whenever I've been short of cash last 25 years, it's always been welding or mechanic work that keeps me in the black.Especially the last 8-9 years...It takes both in today's world, education and trade skills.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveIt takes both in today's world, education and trade skills.
