I my have some work coming up that will require some welding for natural gas piping. This will be 2''-8'' piping. This will not be certified work yet. The question is what is the preferred method to weld this? I can do stick, mig or tig. I used to do some certified piping that required tig root and stick fill/cap. This is not a question of wether or not I can do it but whats correct? Obviously it could depend on customer and that could vary. As of right now for this paticular job they just need good sound welds.

Reply:LOL I am in the USA. I will back up to the heart of the question. I put it on here as it was presented to me so...... I want to do this work and I want to do it right regardless of customer. Which leads me to this, I would assume that say AWS code will determine the process or how it is to be welded? Is there a cert that will cover what I would like to do? I will go search just would like some hands on answers.
Reply:I'm no pipe welder, but I would think it would fall under ASME, or API jurisdiction. If you could get a hold of the WPS that would give you the real truth. Other wise we are just speculating on the process and joint prep.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Sure CEP I understand. May have to get on the phone with an old boss and pick his brain LOL. I havent dug real deep on the web yet either. I questioned customer twice regarding this. I currently weld on excavator booms and sticks for the demolition industry and we"re certified per the insurance company. We work under no codes except for our cert which is for structural plate.
Reply:If you could track down a copy of this book real quick, I'm sure it would be a big help to you.I could see this going either one of several ways. Tig root and hot pass, 6010 fill and cap. 6010 all the way. 6010 root and hot pass, 7018 fill and cap. See what I mean. Reply:I know what you mean on the procedures there are multiple correct ways of doing. I have an email into the testing facility in Columbus they"re the ones that do our testing at work. Gonna go look for that book! Thanks CEP
Reply:Couple of things.  First off, recommend the Rampaul book to anyone.  In the days before u-tube videos it offered really good descriptive info.  Second, this talk about regulatory bodies.  Like to bring up this article even though it's 10 years old.  Basically it's saying that at that time there were 11 states that didn't require any national code regulations/testing and this pressure vessel happened to blow up.  The project was to cut an opening in the vessel, install some internals and then weld your way back out.  The pic shows no prep was done to replace the cut-out....welder simply ran a seal pass, no penetration, can still see the torch cut lines. big worm...sorry to get off subject but some might be interested.http://www.csb.gov/final-report-from...l-regulations/Attachment 509621
Reply:Here's the best way to do it:4 inch and below-TIG all the wayTIG root and hot, 7018 out for the rest

Reply:Downhill stick is fastest and cheapest. Natural gas piping falls under  API and asme depending on the situation. I don't think there are many gas companies that will let anyone weld on their assets without testing them to their procedures.
Reply:usually low pressure nat gas piping is done to the "doesn't leak" code of no F's were given.   At least from every situation i have observed around here.   Its never in my scope of work so i just pay it a passing glance.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:In my area most all natural gas piping requires certified welders . On site welding is 100 % stick, 6010 root and finish out with 7018 . The pressure testing is is witnessed by gas company.     As far as what is correct goes, did customer provide a scope of work , job specs , or do you just go and do it ?  If water leaks you get wet, NATURAL GAS leaks your gonna need more then a raincoat .
Reply:In the oil& gas patch the only crest required are usually a test for the oil company . On location 6010 root& hot 8010 rest of way if hooked to things that bang and clang like compressors and pumps 6010 root and hot 7018 rest of way out . I would not do it with out aproceder the liability on a 8" gas line is more than a tail light warranty .the above is standard on 3000psi and below  hope this helps
Reply:Everyplace you go is going to be different. It also depends on where the pieces are going. Natural gas transmission is different than distribution in pressures and requirements. House lines for commercial business is different yet again. TIG all the way or TIG root and 7018 is by no means the best way to do it. You need to find out where you fall into whos jusidiction it is to regulate and inspect, and find out the acceptable methods for that. MIG and FC are very acceptable for distribution as well as commercial applications. Most distribution is 6010 root/hot/cap or 6010root/hot 7018 cap. This is for natural gasdistribution and transmission  here. weld qualification/pressure testing/etc is set by so many different things. DOT (yep department of transportation, regulating transp of gas across state lines) Corporation commission, etc, company franchise agreement with the state, all have input into the regs, which is why they are all diferent everywhere you go.  So how about this, tell us where you are and what you are going to be making, and what its application is. Then we have something to dig into.

Reply:I always wonder that question myself.  Hypothetically say you had to modify a 4" natural gas line 7-11" wc for a boiler replacement what code and who inspects it? I never have any municipal code enforcers ask for certs.
