I started Mig welding  and I have to do an uphill mig pad weld well i struggled a lot mostly the welds were vary high crowned ugly etc i knew i was doing something wrong but when I asked I was told i cant use bare wire mig uphill I have to switch to dual shield I said okay and thought this isn't true I have seen many people on Youtube weld with er70s6 wire uphill with no problems. So can anyone give me advice on how to mig weld uphill I have er70s-6 mig wire .035 with 75/25 my steel was really thick id say at least 5/8ths or thicker I cleaned the light contamination off with a wire wheel so I know contamination isn't the problem.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:Hello Joe, an in-depth explanation to your question could contain a "LOT" of information. On the shorter side and to a more direct point. Solid wire, with a shielding gas and out of position (in this case vertical), has no puddle formers to support the molten puddle and thus when it is done with sufficient heat to thoroughly bond with a thicker base metal it doesn't have the ability to "freeze" before gravity takes over and either causes it to sag excessively or completely fall-out and run downward. In order to be somewhat successful welding vertical, the voltage needs to be low enough that surface tension will hold it in place or a form of pulse transfer should be enlisted that will provide the appropriate amount of puddle control to make this possible. If reduced voltage is enlisted there is generally a form of manipulation that will be used to aid with the "building" process for the weld bead. Various techniques of manipulation can be employed and likely it will be up to an individuals preference to determine the most applicable one. Many of the major welding equipment manufacturers have very specific systems to address this sort of challenge. Much of the time robotics are involved and in other cases manual manipulation is taken into consideration. Beads done vertically on a flat plate pose the most challenge. Grooves and fillets provide the easiest welding challenges to address when going vertical. The basic idea is to form a shelf that can be built upon and stepped upward allowing the weld puddle to be supported from underneath where the solidified weld metal is. Hope this makes a bit of sense to describe and answer to your question. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald

Reply:What little vertical down hill I've ever done, I like it hot, so pretty much the same settings as flat. Like aevald said, running beads on a flat plate is hard for anybody. When you get into bend testing on V-butt plates you'll want the first pass or two to be really flat. If you end up with wagon tracks, it makes it that much harder on you to eat them out with the next pass. Here are some vertical up Mig welds I made years ago. Reply:If you make a uphill root , the gap should not too be large .this wire is a good wire to join uphill .
