Well, except for the tig skills and the machine shop with all the stuff to do this right... I had to replace a sprocket on a 3.5" dia shaft, but it was worn undersize, and the new part would not fit properly. Having never done this before, and since I don't have the equipment for the job, I said: "I can build up that worn shaft with weld, and turn it back down to size."   I made a couple of triangles with 2x2 angle, and welded them to the wall so that a straight edge sat nice across them and the undamaged part of the shaft. I used these as a guide to run beads of 7018 for buildup. I then  turned the motor on to spin the shaft, and cut the welds down with a file laid across the two angles. I used several clamping setups, and another triangle brace to reduce the chatter, that I didn't get a pic of, but bottom line is, it worked. This is slow speed stuff (60 ish rpm's) and not ultra precise, just need the sprocket to fit tightly so it isn't working on the shaft all the time. The two piece sprocket offered a little fudge factor as well. I saved alot of $ and time compared to replacing the shaft , and my wheels are turning now,(pun intended), as far as maybe making some better portable setup to do this job. Something with a hand wheel, and a real cutting tool...Sorry for the cell phone pics, it's all I had. And, just for the record, the hammer tracks and torch gouging were done by the guys who removed the old stuff, not yours truly.Any suggestions for improvement would be welcome. Reply:Thanks for the kind words guys. It was a good feeling to pull this off. And Zap, all kidding aside, although it never crossed my mind at the time, I probably got the idea that I could do this from looking at all those shingle roller repairs. Thanks for the inspiration.
