I have an opportunity to pickup 4 rolls of Lincoln  L-56 ER70S-6 from a company that went out of business.  They have two 33lb rolls of 035 and two of 045 for a $100.  My question is what is the best application of 045 wire in a 250  Mig?  I do not wanna buy something I will never have use for.  What is the max thickness of steel that 035 will effectively weld in one pass? 5/8-3/4 inch plate? How thin of steel could the 045 weld without issues?
Reply:This might help from Miller. Larger wire will lay down more metal than smaller wire obviously. If you were doing large filet welds over 1/2" .045 would be the way to go if not bigger. Reply:I have .045 in one of my feeders that I use for doing dumptruck floors, buckets, etc.... and have occasionally welded a muffler or floor pan with it when in a hurryDisclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:id grab all four rolls for that price. even if u dont use the .045 you could always sell it.
Reply:Hello there,I managed to grab a big MIG machine (power plant and feeder are separate units, 380-400 3ph, 230A 100%, 300A 60% etc) that was used by some construction workers to stich rebar together before pouring concrete over it. In the package the seller included a NIB 15kg roll of 1,2mm (.047" aprox) and there is half a roll of the very same wire in the feeder (need to scrap the first layer of it).I went to a LWS asking about .6mm wire (like .023" or so) and they told me that it is pretty much not used at all, difficult to find and expensive. They told me the most commonly used wire is .8mm (.031"). Even those who fix cars and such seem to use that kind of wire.We are not going to be welding anything structural with this machine. Most of it will be arround cars, some stands for tooling, all of it less than 1/4" for sure. Should I go with the .8mm wire as suggested or make the effort and try to get some .6mm with all the needed bits (rollers, contact tips, etc)? Thanks in advance,Mikel

Reply:YouWeld, thanks a lot for the information. I guess we are going to give the .030 a go and see if it fits our needs. We will get a 5kg roll instead of a 15kg just in case we don't end up using it much.BTW, too bad you guys don't ship overseas also for free! You truly have great prices there.I also wonder why I have such a hard time finding electrodes and wires that overseas seem to be used like everyday (celullosic rods for example). The local LWS don't carry too much stuff. They just stick with the more common consumables and make a living on that. I bet you that when I happen to go there to ask about aluminum wire the discussion about where I should get 4043 or 5356 is going to be out of the question... because they will probably only have one of them. Thanks a lot!Mikel
