hi I am a first year welding student at a private college in maine, and we have a cnc machine which I am using to make a sign out of 4X16X1/8 low carbon steel plate. I have decided to color case harden the plate after it has been thru the cnc machine because I want the blues purples oranges etc. that come out after case hardening. however I don't believe our school has an oven. does anyone have any suggestions tips or tricks to achieve the same end result or is the oven the only way? pls help meby the way for a little more clarification the effect I am looking for is on the gun in this link: http://firearmshistory.blogspot.com/...hardening.html thanks a bunch

Reply:Like 7A749 stated, just by heating the steel with a torch will let you get various oxide colors on the surface.He stated You want to remove all the mill scale for the best results.
