Plastic pipe "slitter"

Threw this togher the other day. It makes a spiral slice around a plastic pipe and then I use it to wrap arpund and protect hydraulic lines. They sell this type of protector at hyd. hose shops but It's kinda pricey. I used a sawzall blade that was broken and handy on the bench for the cutter. Took a small zip wheel to make a hook in the sawsall blade then sharpened it with a small chainsaw file. It took 2 tries to get the right angle, but it works real nice. When I find the right size plastic pipe to fit the line for my plas. I'm gonna make one for it, I'm too broke to spring for the nice leather cover rught now. Attached Images

Reply:Bob  To use it I clamp it in the vice and twist the plas. pipe thu it with a small pipe wrench. You loose your grip on the pipe when it enters into the steel pipe, just back it out and waste the 4-5 in. at the end.Forhire The sch 40 pipe is 1 1/2" it fit nicely over the black 1" well line. Then I thought that if I put a small pipe (for a guide) inside the larger that it would guide the pipe to slit onto the cutter at the right point to slit it consistantly. The pics show the black 1" blue 3/4 pex, and red 1/2" pex. For the 3/4 I insrt a pc. of 1"emt elec. conduit. For the 1/2 it takes a pc of 3/4" plas, conduit. The thumb screw holds these (inside) pipe guides. I'm sure that there is room for improvement, it's all made of junk that I has handy. For a guy that had a motorised pipe threading machine you could chuck up the cutter and go to town!The angle is about 20 deg off 90 and that seems about perfect for the 1". The slits get closer as the pipe size gets smaller.
