Hey guys, I'm sure this has been discussed multiple times. I've been searching and have found some great info. I want some opinions on my particular project so figured I would ask. thank you in advance for any and all help! :-) I'm building a trailer to pull behind my 42' motor coach strictly for using at ballgame tailgating events. I have purchased a 22' box (off a delivery truck). I have the axel placement calculated and I'm unsure of the exact way to design the frame and tongue. The floor of the box is 3/4" plywood and the bottom frame is made up of 4" I- beams ( S-4x7.7) on 12" centers. I can supply autocad drawings as i finish them if this helps. My questions are (1) What should I use for the frame for the box to sit on? (2) What should the tongue length be? Thanks again in advance for any help! Andy

Reply:I own a fab shop and have guys that weld for me. I can run a bead, but I don't do it daily.
Reply:This is the idea I'm working with. I do not have frame specs at this point. I was waiting to see what kind of feed back i got here first. Also, the dimension from the front of the box to the center of the hitch point was just a guess. let me know what you think. Attached ImagesFrame Detail.pdf (30.5 KB, 173 views)
Reply:Do you have any idea how much this box weighs now? I come up with roughly 1500 lbs for just the I beams you listed. Add plywood walls and supports, frame, breaks tires etc not to mention all the cr@p you will want to load in a box that big, and I see this topping 10K easy. Top 10k on the trailer and you need the same license you need to pull a big rig.Weight will tell you what you need as far as the frame. Our little 7K tandem has a lot lighter frame than the 15 ton tag a long does. Also not sure if you have ever pulled a trailer that long behind the motor home. Backing that rig up will be a whole new experience with the turning radius and long wheel base on the motor home especially in tight quarters. You might want to borrow or rent a 22' bed landscape trailer 1st and then go out to a big parking lot with some cones and try maneuvering that beast around some. I know how much of an addition hassle just an extra 3' of wheel base on the crew cab makes with our little 14' trailer at times..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DSW, Thanks for the reply. The box is stamped at 3850 lbs weight as of now. The actual load towing will (as i figure) will be around 8400-8700 lbs. I do have experience of towing trailers this size and larger behind my coach. As for placement (backing up) I actually have a motorized dolly that is used for trailer moving. This is a project I have been thinking about for almost 3 years. I can't find a trailer that suits my purpose without spending $17,000 plus. and, as much as i love projects... haha. figured I'd make my own and that way it'd be exactly what i want. The axles I'm using are rated 10,400 lbs.hmm.... how much does beer and liquor weight?? lol plus I'm sure it'll be lighter coming back home than going.
Reply:oh, btw.... The only steel is in the floor frame. the rest is aluminum and thin sheet metal. |
