Welding Rod For 1G Flat Plate welding

Hello, I would like to know what type of welding rod supposed to use in root pass of 1G plate position or Flat butt joint plate welding, isn't right to use 7018 welding rod or 6010 that use in pipe welding? Currently I apply 7018 for 1G,2G, 3G, 4G plate welding. Is it correct. Thanks

Reply:With the proper joint prep either one will work. You don't say what thickness of plate you are welding, though, which may make a difference. Is this for practice, a test, or what?
Reply:Either. Open root, back weld, or backing weld?The last 2 make it pretty darn easy!
