Just got my Lenco portable rod oven yesterday ($50 auction find) and have a few questions.besides 7018 do any common rods benefit from time in the oven or should not be placed in an oven? 6010,11,13 etc.I was given some old open 50lb tins of 7018.  wil they come back to life in the oven and be usable for non code work.    I read the other threads on the storage of 7018.  will taking them from the oven and vacuum bag sealing be a good way to store them for extend times? would rebake before using.  I also have those plastic rod containers with rubber seals would be equal or better than the vacuum bag ideaAny limit to the number of times you can re-oven rods?Do preheated rods weld better?Last edited by soutthpaw; 06-11-2011 at 07:32 AM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:6010, 6011 and such should not be stored in an oven. They have a cellulose based coating which needs a little moisture to work right. Really, only 'low hydrogen' rods are required to be stored in an oven. You generally can't "re-bake" rods in a portable oven. They need a higher temperature. How many times a rod can be re-baked depends on the manufacturers recommendations, the code that you are working under, and even the employers procedures. We are only allowed one re-bake. Non code work doesn't really matter that much. The oven storage is to keep out the moisture, which leads to hydrogen cracking in the weld. Most "mild steel" isn't all that sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement. The higher the strenth of the steel, the more prone to hydrogen problems.Just my opinion, but I would say that the rod cans with the seal are better than a plastic bag. You could even toss in one of those silica gel packs, if you can find them.Do preheated rods run better? I can't say that I've ever seen much difference, but others may disagree. I mostly run 3/32 and 1/8. Pipelining with the bigger rods may make a difference.
Reply:Warm rods weld better. We compared many times at the welding school where I worked. Our pipeliner instructor staff insisted they be warm as well.Bake your old rods. We used a couple thousand lbs of old rod for practice, and it passed bend tests with flying colors. If they are very white on the outside they may not work well, so what I did was sort as I loaded the rod oven. Flakey/damaged rods were scrapped, the rest got used.
Reply:I've run 7018 from an oven and also that which was stored in moist conditions. Both weld fine for me. The dry rod do run better. Was there hydrogen cracking problems? To be honest, if that was a concern they wouldn't have me welding on it.  But I've seen the pipefitters weld with 7018 that was stored in the elements and they came out fine. You'd have to probably do more than run dry rod to eliminate all the hydrogen problems,,,pre-heat, post-heat, etc. I've used 6010 from an oven and prefer it to be stored out of the oven, Seems a little more consistent when it isn't totally dry. Never use 6013 but it doesn't seem to need any special handling.Any type of code work or safety related work is a whole different ball game.AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:7018 and other LoHy, Should be stored in an oven between 250*F & 300*F.6013,6022,7014,7024, Should be stored in an oven between 100*F & 130*F.6010,6011,7010,8010,9010, Should be stored dry at room temp.Per Hobart filler metals catalog."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Thanks for the replies.  that helps.  baking the second batch now.  first batch got stored warm in those plastic containers so should keep pretty well now... My oven is 500 watts at 300 F, 50lb capacity. so seems to warm up pretty fast.  Ill leave the current rods in the oven and just plug it in a couple hours before i need to use them...Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Hot Rods start easier, and tend to not have porosity issues in that first few beads.I grabbed a Phoenix portable oven mostly because I have 7018 laying around the shop for a while before it gets burned. Same at work, open a 50lb can and it may sit for 2 weeks while we're building sections and fitting headers.I have found that cheaper rod burns better overhead when hot. They arc faster, stick less and lay a little flatter. Reply:500W!!! WOW!I'm gonna wait and buy a 50# Keen which is only 150W. The Phoenix Dry Rod oven is 300W, but it looks like you just put the 50#'s of rod WITH THE ROD CAN, in the oven. The Keen, you only put the rods in the oven. And I plan on storing 10#'s ea. of 7018 3/32", 1/8" and 5/32". But I plan on leaving it on all the time. The cost of running the Lenco will be ALOT more. I think I calculated $110.00/yr for the 150W, and $365.00 for the 500W."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!!
