Im 21 and started my welding career roughly 1 year ago and can't see myself doing anything else. I get to work a hour and half early and stay late until the lights turn off to practice. I bought a welder as well to practice on weekends. My goal is to master all the processes I do at work and also learn about other process and techniques on all different kinds of materials, theroy as well. I currently have my tickets all in 6G for:   6010 root-7018 fill & cap , tig root-7018 fill & cap , stainless TIG all the way out. Im interested in learning/mastering many different processes and techniques to weld pipe and also grabbing the certs to go along with them to make myself a well rounded welder. If anyone could give me some info on the different processes to weld carbon, stainless, and aluminum pipe. Also titanium, duplex, inconel and anything else anyone knows about. In General any info you guys could give on the different processes and tickets to along with them for pipe welding all different kinds of materials is really appreciated. Also info such as the RMD or STT way to put in a root pass and fluxcore or solid wire to fill and cap. When welding stainless pipe if you want to fill and cap with STICK does it have to be rolled or can it be in the fixed position.?In General any info you guys could give on the different processes and tickets to along with them for pipe welding all different kinds of materials is really appreciated.**Also any info yout guys could give on tickets for AWS, CWB, and TSSA for plate that are good to have to make yourself a more knowledgable welder and more employable.  ex.(carbon steel-different grades, stainless-different grades, aluminum, titanium, chrome-molly, inconel, duplex, and anything else you guys might know about. Take Care guys and have a Great weekend.
Reply:Good start with what you got.  Might  suggest you practice the same procedures with different gaps/landings.  Lets say the bossman comes to you and says qc has marked out a cluster of porosity.  Would you know how to repair it?  Experiment with some intentional porosity.   Have someone create a draft.  Can you pick out the start of the problem.  Try to weld over it instead of properly grinding it out.  See how far the 'accidental' porosity has followed your arc around the joint.  Not much call for it, but run some 7018 roots, same technique as stainless root.  Should be able to run stainless stick in position.  A lot of tests are stainless tig root/fill with stick to finish.  You have your 7018  caps down pat?  When practicing, change to 309 to finish out.  Most stainless tests are on heavier tubing though so maybe limit yourself to 1/4" wall in 2g and 3/8" wall in 5g.Last edited by OldSparks; 11-02-2013 at 10:55 PM.
