Made entirely out of scrap: a R/C car shelf & charging station. I used to race these cars almost 30 years ago. Tamiya re-released a bunch of classic designs last year. My son wanted a nice R/C for his birthday. One thing led to another, and now we all have one.  It should be fun when we go camping. The garage was starting to look a little junky, so I whipped up a quick shelf. If the cars are arranged side-by-side, the top two shelves can hold a total of 10 cars, so there's roomfor more!Materials: 1 1/2" x 3/16" flatbar MIGged with .035 ER70s-6. Rustoleum flat black.3/8" OSB scraps. (dumpster diving!)1/4" hardware.Everything was scrap and on hand, so the project cost zero. Last edited by scrapwelder; 03-19-2012 at 01:31 PM.
Reply:I used to be huge into RC cars, mainly Tamiya cars. I had a Clodbuster, a Blackfoot, and a Grasshopper... tons of fun.
Reply:Cool!!  I had Nitro trucks for a while, but had too many hobbies...Shelves look good, but PAINT EM!!!!
Reply:Looks nice. Just needs some paint on that wood though. I remember the track owner where I used to race at had an old Tamiya Lunchbox that was always hanging out on the counter. I think it was yellow though. I used to race Team Associated and Hyperdrive pan cars on indoor oval tracks years ago. Had sponsors and everything. Team Associated offered to have me race for them but at the time I wasn't in the position to travel all over New England. Would of been fun though, I was pretty disappointed having to turn them down.
Reply:Nice, Are those originals or reissues? That brings back the memories from the mid 80's... my first rc was a Tamiya hornet, followed by countless others.. clod buster,  super sabre,ESAB Heliarc 252
Reply:Thanks guys! They are all re-issues. Too bad I didn't hold onto the originals - they are worth crazy money right now. The Hornet was my first car too, way back when. I had converted mine to street with Bolink and Parma goodies and was running even with guys 3x my age with waaayyyy nicer cars at the local track!  Stock for stock, the Hornet is the fastest car out of everything on the shelf that you see. The nicest car for the money would be the Sand Rover (the purple open top buggy). The componentry is way nicer than the '80s Hornet design. Drop a sport-tuned motor and a set of bearings in, and she should fly. The Black VW up top is pretty awesome in the handling department with the wide stance and stock oil shocks. It would be 2nd fastest in stock trim.I had completely forgotten about the crappy design of the Hornet's battery cover. Ahh - memories!  We have a velcro strap wrapped around it to keep it from falling out on jumps. Hmmm....sounds like another welding project to me!

Reply:Cool stuff. Been into rc since I was 11 myself. Granted I made the jump to helis (more expensive and unforgiving   ).  Nice seeing some other Associated fans.Your cool shelf gives me the idea to try and make one for all the rc junk I've got..maybe hang the helis from a ceiling rack of sorts.HTP Invertig 221-DV -- get's dragged everywhere.Syncro 200 -- "The Boat Anchor" at the lab.Lincoln 125 MIG
