Here is the newest edition to our High School Shop. My advanced welding kids built the whole thing. It is a TANK! 3x3x3/16" tubing legs with 3/4" bolts in the bottom for leveling, 2x2x3/16" angle for shelf supports, and a 1/2" plate top (30"x72") . They MIG welded everything and when we put it in place it was perfectly level before any adjustments! Only about an 1/8" out of square. I am pretty proud of the kids, theydid a great job. We are reconditioning two different sized vises, a Beverly Shear, an anvil made from a rail, a pipe vise, and a Harbor Freight mini ring roller to fit in the receiver hitch we attached on the side of the table. I want to thank all you guys on the forum for all the great ideas we have picked up here! Here are a few pics of the build and I will post some pics of the Hitch items when the paint is dry and they are assembled. Reply:Very nice job to you and especially your kids!I wish I had the same sort of direction when I was young.I think I may have some welding envy. Great Job GuysI hope many classes that follow get to use that table. How do you know the blacksmith's dog? When you hollar at him he makes a bolt for the door!
Reply:Your welding class should be required to wear boots at least. A hot spark down the sneaker is no fun.But a nice table non the lessLast edited by thejonn2524; 04-05-2012 at 10:08 PM.

Reply:Nice. Good to see the kids doing real world welding rather than just running beads. The one downside I see to that is the open mesh on the lower shelf. At the tech school I help out at, the area under that shelf would quickly get loaded up with dirt and dust that looks impossible to clean easily..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Looking good. Wish i took a welding class when i was still in HS.

Reply:Great looking bench! I actually like the expanded metal shelves. Any junk that falls through could be easily swept out with a pushbroom. The paint (if painted) will stay intact better than if sheetmetal. As another person mentioned about the workboots - I recall wearing leather spats over our shoes. Perhaps the school boards should have affordable boots or spats with toecaps available to the students at no or minimal cost.
