I'm wanting to build a forge out of a Dutch oven. I don't know how to "cut" a 2" hole in the center bottom of the pot. I understand you much heat cast iron. Any help is appreciated.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:hole saw.
Reply:Why not simply use a brake drum or rotor instead? They come with a big hole in the center already and usually you can pick up one from a mechanic for free..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks, brake drum it is. Did you know I forgot my wife's and my 40th wedding anniversary? Yea I did and she was p   ed. Told me she wanted something new, red, that would do 0 to 60mph in 3 seconds. Well I haven't seen her since. I don't think she like the bathroom scales I bought her. Reply:Yea, thanks. I've got  couple of friends with truck mechanic shops I'll get with after this sleet, ice, and snow moves out. I've got the pipe, blower, a steel table I think I'm going to use as the support and where the blower can fit under out of the way. I can't express enough the thanks to all of you guys for your help in all of my posts. It's a lot of fun and the amount of knowledge you guys have and your ingenuity is mind boggling. Thanks. Reply:You don't need a huge drum if you are running coal. My fire pot in my table forge is only 4x4 at the bottom and maybe 12" square at the top, 4" deep and I can heat a pretty good sized piece. All a bigger drum does is waste fuel many times and it's harder to get a smaller controlled fire. However if you want to use charcoal vs coal, you will want a larger firepot and a deeper fire. With a smaller fire pot and a table, you just pile up the charcoal more.I'd agree Iforgeiron is a good site. Reply:Shortfuse, that's what I have I visioned doing. I have a hair dryer, bathroom ventilator, a kitchen ventilator and three draft inducers with adjustable dampers. I think I'll start with one of those. Thanks for the site info and all of your helpSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Dsw and Shortfuse, I'm really considering using charcoal. Propane here is right at $3.00/gl. and coal is virtually unavailable. I've been going to do this for years and finally retired and am loving my own time now with the wife, property, tractor, shop, and dog. Thanks for all the help.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Never really done any serious forging using charcoal since I have coal available. From what I understand it's better to use lump charcoal vs briquets. Iforgeiron has a lot of good posts on charcoal forges and several guys there have built their own charcoal retorts for cooking down scrap wood so they can get their fuel for "free"..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I've just signed up for iforge. The amount of knowledge is mind boggling. Thanks for the info. I've read several posts on charcoal vs other fuels. At least in the beginning I'm having to use it. I wish I had have gone with my gut feeling when I was 30 or so. I've waited so long to fill some of my bucket list, learning to use a forge and building different things. But I guess your never to "young" to learn. lolSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I know Thorshammer here is over there on IFI, "Arkie" there is a member here, but under a different name here. I forget whom right now. Mudbug1 is another one that I can remember off the top of my head. I believe there are several others.Yeah lots of good info there, especially if you are just starting out. Some of the guys are a bit short on people who don't do searches, so if you ask the same basic questions, you'll probably get a few, "go look" replies, but overall the guys are real helpful if you are detailed and show you've done some due diligence and looked first. One thing, the site is pretty G rated and they work hard to keep it that way. They don't tolerate a lot of what we would ignore here as PG 13. No cursing even if you blot out the words or use abbreviations.Papa where are you located, you haven't updated your profile to show it. ( They really like you to post it over on IFI, they have a lot of guys in places other than the US there. A bunch I know the use charcoal are in the UK) You might find a local group in your area that can help you as well. There are also a bunch of places that run basic forge classes.Last edited by DSW; 11-24-2013 at 06:17 PM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks, DSW. Good info to have. I from central Oklahoma. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Might look into getting together with these guys. I'm pretty sure you can hook up with them for coal.http://www.saltforkcraftsmen.org/I've heard some good things about their group and when I get the cash, I'm thinking about contacting them for one of their swage blocks and one of their cone mandrels if I haven't located anything local yet..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
