I have no idea how to tig weld yet but I need some ideas for a machine. I have a friend who can weld and I have a few projects going on that require welding and it's a bitch to have him bring a welder out to my place. The welding that I need done isn't anything too major, it mostly involves tig welding firearms. Any decent machines that won't break the bank, preferably no HF stuff?

Reply:Sounds like a simple DC tig would fit your needs. The Miller Maxstar 150 would fit the bill. But I really like the Diversion 180, which will do AC when you have the need. The Diversion is so stupid easy to learn you will be off and running in no time. All you do is choose the metal, then thickness, and the machine figures all the rest for you.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:No disrespect to Gamble and ironwelder, but liftarc tigs are the last thing you want to weld delicate or intricate parts with. You really want to consider the variable foot control.Do yourself a favor and purchase an integrated complete system with full owners manual and customer support.Again, if it does not have a quality foot control in the equation, you are wasting your time. The Miller Maxstar 150 for instance goes down to 5 amps, and you can purchase the foot control as an option. The Miller Diversion 180 goes down to 10 amps. The Miller Dynasty goes down to 1 amp. All can use foot control for precise work. For instance I fill the sight grooves on many an antique firearm that gets a full restoration including engrave or gold inlays. Others I build up critical or worn areas with customer's proprietary filler wires. How do I know? I do this every work day.Last edited by shovelon; 07-19-2011 at 05:47 PM.Reason: spellingWeld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea. |
