Sorry for such a basic question but I need to weld some angle iron "posts" to some other angle iron.  Think adding the bottom to a T.  What is the best method to getting them square and plumb?
Reply:Plumb, you use a level most times. They make post levels that have bubbles in 2 directions so you can plumb both ways at once, or you just keep moving the level back and forth. Square, I'd go with a framing square probably.Note that just because something is plumb, doesn't mean it will be square to the top rail. If the rail isn't level, than a plumb post will be out of square at the joint. I've seen any number of creative interpretations of "level" on a job site, with things be out out of level quite a bit and still called "level" by a contractor. Determine what will look the best, or what the customer is willing to accept if you have to choose between square and plumb..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:after many years of fabing i found the best way is to lean the piece toward you slightly than the give a good tack  opposite side  the piece will move  anywhere you want it.
Reply:If you have a lot of these to do, how about welding up a really solid jig out of some scrap to hold the "tee" piece rigidly in exact position while welding.Cheers,  Tony._________________________________Transmig 310 + Argoshield LightOxy acetyleneOxy propanePrehistoric stick welder_________________________________
Reply:Start with your piece a little bit past 90 degrees, tack it, bend it towards the tack to straighten it out, then tack it on the other side. Hope this helps. Attached Images
Reply:Use a square nig nog. And play the pull.HammerFile Big Hammer------------------------------Here, let me Google that for you...
Reply:Levels only work if your table is level.-Put you bottom angle flat on the table-Cope your vertical angle to fit the horz angle to provide more welding surface. (structural integrity)-Use a framing square to fit/tack-Weld in a sequence that will eliminate distortion (small welds in different places before "weldout")good luck Launce- CWI
