I was just wondering if anyone gets all of their supplies online and if so, is it cheaper after shipping? I always go about 35 miles to get mine and it's getting to be a chore. I get all my rods, wire and consumables from praxair or airgas. Get my gas from a local shop a few miles away. Get most of my grinding disks from lowes/ Home Depot. I like to be able to handle the items I get so I'm kinda scared to get stuff online. Just looking for opinions. Reply:I haven't been at it that long but I'm finding that by ordering from the online stores discussed here, you're pretty much assured of not needing to handle the merchandise first. I know what you mean though. But with the experience of the people here having done business with these stores, I've always found pathways not only to reputable, online stores but to the best deals like the thread on Jackson helmets. All-in, and we're getting $300 helmets for $139 with some lower. So, I'd agree; on-line's usually a crap shoot but with the experienced people here on this forum, it's kinda hard to go wrong. Besides, I always find that the big box store welding expert today clocked in yesterday as their plumbing expert.
Reply:Mine mostly comes via internet purchases and public bus from 4 hours away(San Jose). If I call, right now,(3pm fri) I can have anything I need by 6 am when the trucks roll in. It's certainly cheaper than buying local. I buy wholesale. I even buy liquor direct !Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:I don't buy much from the welding shop any more their Washington alloy brand 5/32'' sticks and solid steel mig wire sucks, their gas and stainless wire is alright.I like the Lincoln brand sticks and wire from the big box store a lot better.I have bought lots of 3 or more 2lb Lincoln solid wire rolls and saved a few dollars per roll after shipping compared to getting it from the store. If you need several stick welder lead plugs and receptacles ebay might be the way to go.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:I choose to buy online. I do it for nearly everything. You know exactly what you are getting and do not have to look for stuff the the store does not even have in the first place. I find the online prices are much less expensive.http://www.weldfabulous.com/c-168-st...section=-1451-

Reply:I always support local businesses whenever possible, because I'm one of them. My LWS knows me by name, usually has what I need in-stock (or they get it from another branch overnight), and most of the time are competitive pricewise. I'm only a hobbyist, the commercial welders buy more in a week than my annual purchases. But they treat everyone the same, answer a lot of questions, provide a lot of useful tips. I've gone in with a printout of something I found online, they will have a similar product and comparable pricing. They are a small company, located only in this state, and I'm fortunate to have a branch here. However, having read some of the posts here about lousy service & pricing at the large national chains (no names mentioned...), I can fully understand why people would go online.Hobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?

Reply:The airgas over here was great, now they suck! You can buy a pair of gloves and it takes at least 10 minutes to ring it up. They don't have prices on anything so it's hard to watch what you spend. And they have the parking lot a long ways from the main door so I have to borrow their cart if I get more than I can carry.Miller trailblazer301gLincoln sa200Miller251Miller spectrum 625Victor oxy-acc2002 Chevy duramax 3500 dually 4x4

Reply:I buy consumables like rods, tools, leads, stingers, etc. online. The nearest LWS is a pile of cr*p, and has a very poor supply, variety of rods and some supplies and the counter help is utterly worthless. Can't even get Excalibur 7018 3/32" in anything but a 50# can; big waste for me. Online, I have a much bigger selection to buy from.If I order online, most purchases have about a $10-$20 shipping charge, depending on weight. If I drive to the nearest decent LWS which is 45 miles away, the gas is $15 plus mileage. Online, I just have it shipped and get it at the front door, no wasted road time, no wear and tear on the truck and a break-even on the shipping vs. travel.

Reply:I buy 90 percent of my supplies from my local welding supply and all of my machines from them. They get real close to the best online prices. The support they provide is well worth the little extra. If i need something bad enough after hours they will come in and open the doors for me. I have been dealing with them for 20 some years and it is a family owned and run business.

Reply:I buy almost everything I can online.......being able to search and order from a smart phone is a great thing!
Reply:The reason prax and some of the others don't put prices is so they can better gouge you. Not all of them mind you. It would piss me off when I'd go to parsons airgas in El Centro, Ca. and get two different prices on the same item. Contractors get one price, govt' another, schools another, brothers-in-law another. So yes Indiana Ox. gets my business as well as several of the others mentioned. I'll caution you on buying rod in 50# cans. Some of the rods could have flux left on them when they arrive. But with a rod that has no flux you don't have to chip off slag. I find this to be a good timesaving step. Reply:I try to buy local with everything I can (not only for welding) but there are times that I buy online. TIG cups, gas lenses, tungsten etc.. I will buy online. Welding machines I will always buy local, as if there is a problem with them they are much quicker to do everything possible to remedy the problem then when you walk in with an online machine that they didn't make a dime on. I am lucky as I have 2 LWS within 10 minutes of my house and two more inside of 20 minutes away. The closes one only has a 3% markup on new machines and when they have leftovers they are generous with the price to move them out the door. They also have great customer service and pretty well-supplied shelves.I'm just a big fan of keeping my money as local as possible. The people who live around me have families and mouths to feed and the odds are already stacked against us little guys. It all comes full circle at the end of the day. Online retailers don't hand out cards for you or drop a phone number to someone looking to get a quick job done. I was a little pi$$d when he wouldn't sell me the miller gloves I wanted. Can't get one pair, must get six at a time!! Heck, that was the last pair on the shelf and I got um last time with no problem. So I settled for some lincoln gloves. Not as comfortable as the black miller gloves but I had to settle for them.
