I just purchased a 180 Lincoln 230v. Plan on building a few smokers and play around with some motorcycle tanks I have, skys the limit lol. I want to run gas but have no clue on wire size .025, .030 or.035?  Looking on some insite on whats going to work the best for me. I'm thinking the thickest I will come across will be 1/4in for my smoker. Or is there a site I can read about the sizes.Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Reply:I would start with .035 with co2/argon or straight co2. The cool thing about bare mig is it's fairly cheap at Tractor Supply for a ten pound spool of .035 mig wire is 30 bucks and it should last you awhile.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:Is that the Hobart wire?Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Reply:Here's a page from Miller that will give you a rough idea what wire size to use for what material thickness. I know guys who will weld outside these wire size ranges, so it's just a good starting point to work from.http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...tips/MIG_tips/I keep .023 wire in my small 110v mig for sheet metal. I typically keep .030 solid in my bigger mig for general purpose work, and will load my spool of .035 wire if I know I'm going to be doing a lot of heavy welding. I don't use a lot of FC wire, all my stuff at home is usually solid with C25 gas. With your 180 amp Lincoln, .035 solid may be pushing it a bit. You might find .030 solid a better match to the voltage output on your machine..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:i agree with the man DSW on the 30. i keep it loaded in my 3 machines from mm175 to mm211. 35 in my 252 for heavier stuff. if you are mig on bike tanks with limited experience you may need to learn to braze to plug pinholes.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:Use .025'' for almost everything and .035'' flux core for the heavier stuff just crank up the volts.Usually I grab my grossly obsolete stick welder for any thing to heavy for .025'' wire with C70 mix as opposed to changing over to flux core wire.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:So .025 or .030 should give me good performance with my 180 .Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Reply:I would agree on the .030. From previous posts the .030 wire is the Miller 211's favorite wire.  .024 for the thinner gauges. I use the Lincoln L-56 wire in my 211. I got it at Home Depot , $ 35.00 for 8'' spool and I think it's 12 pounds .
Reply:kind of off topic of this guys post but its wire non the less..... has anyone ever herd of national standard wire,???? my company just got it in .040 most of us hate it compared to the esab stuff we normally get
Reply:Not a prob sae300 I'm new to all this so I'm into learning all I can Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Reply:I'm going to buy the big spool of .030 wire and if I'm doing small metals I will play with some .025.  Will the .025 give you a smaller weld and is it better to tack weld with the .025 when it comes to sheet metal like bike tanks ?  Thanks for all the good info.Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
