Learned My Lesson

Due to budget constraints (and not being able to find a used stick welder locally) I ordered a Longevity Stick Weld 250 on 7/1/11.  On July 11, I received the welder.  When I plugged it in, the LCD display would only display 3-4 amps, regardless of the knob setting.  When I tried to weld with it, it quickly filled my garage with smoke.  So, I called Longevity.  They sent a return authorization and shipped me another unit.  Yesterday, the replacement welder arrived.  When I unpackaged it, it clearly had been used.  The handle was broken and when I plugged it in, the LCD display would only read 000.  So, I did not even try to weld with it.  I called Longevity and they sent a return shipping label and issued a refund.  I have to give Simon credit for doing the right thing.So, 3 weeks later, I still don't have a working welder.  Last night, I broke down and ordered a Thermal Arc 161S welder from Cyberweld.  After some bad experiences, I vowed long ago to not buy any cheap power tools or hand tools.  I even did the same with lawn equipment.  Now, I am making the same vow with welding equipment.  I have 2 Hobart wire welders that are great.  I also have an Everlast Plasma Cutter that I hope will last.  If not, I will buy a Hypertherm or Thermal Dynamics machine.  Sometimes it takes being burned for me to learn

Reply:It stinks, when you get something that doesn't work, when you sell something that doesn't work... and the biggest is when you make something that doesn't work. It just sucks rocks...Tomorrow is another day... I usually use it to mess up all over again!Maybe a bummed out thread would work better than a peed off thread... Reply:Post back when you get the 161S up and running and let us know what you think.  Looks like a good value for the money and Thermal Arc seems to be doing OK with the imports.

Reply:I have most certainly NOT learnt my lesson yet. I cannot justify spending obscene amounts of $ on brand name stuff so I go with the chinese made stuff.That said, I buy my stuff from a local supplier with a shopfront who also supports and repairs everything he sells.For some reason, it seems near impossible to source second hand brand name welding kits.Anyhow, so far I could not be happier with my chinese TIG, my chinese plasma cutter and italian MIG and I have no regrets whatsoever. If I had to depend on these tools to make my living it would be totally different of course.Other power tools, I tend to pay a little more and buy Makita and Metabo.Last edited by Llundberg; 07-22-2011 at 06:35 AM.
