this is my first time running a root and cap on stainless steel pipe in the 5G postilion equipment used  maxstar 200 #17 air cooled tig rig used a #10 for the root and a #8 for the cap gas lens 20 cfm gas flow and purged the inside of the pipe i was running around 60 to 65 amps Attached ImagesQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:Were you at 60-65 amps the whole way out? Need more pictures. Root/cap. Did you freehand or walk the cup? What size filler? How thick is the pipe? From the looks of it you need to practice keeping the weld size even. When filling the bevel, try to fill it just under the edge so you have nice even lines to follow on the cover pass. Can't tell you a whole lot more without more info.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:60 to 65 the whole way out used 1/8th filler ER316L pipe wall thickness is also 1/8th i walked the cup were not alloud to freehand ill try to snap pic of root with the webcam really quickQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:sorry for the crappy picture its all i can use right now Attached ImagesQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:if need be i can take my stainless wire brush to the root really quick but it looks the same all the way around the pipe is 4 inch if that helpsQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:The weld is too wide for 1/8" wall, did you weld past the edge of the bevel? Could be why it is inconsistent, there are no lines to follow. From the root pic it looks like you got even penetration most of the time but the color looks a bit dark, it should be shiny with a little color. Prob need to purge longer before welding. 1/8" filler is a little too big for 1/8" wall, it can be done but 1/16" or 3/32" will melt and fuse better without adding allot of extra heat. 1/8" could be welded in a single pass but at most I would want 2 passes. prob around 70 amps for open root and near 90-105 for the cap. Single pass with or without a little gap would be a bit higher amperage prob 110-120.How did the color on the cap look? What about the root?Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:the cap color was copper before i brushed it the inside before i did the cap was like a rainbow all the way around . the most amps im aloud to run at school is 65 on stainless so im limited on that but i will drop my wire size and see if that helps any .another problem i have is on the bottom when i cap my rod dose not like to melt it will ball up and fall off or the rod will slip and ill dip my tungsten any way to solve this problem ?as far as the cap i went to the edge of my bevel so i could get it all covered if i run a smaller wire i could make the bevel steeper so i dont whip out so farLast edited by tylersloan; 12-07-2013 at 04:27 PM.Reason: more infoQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:Often if the rod is balling up its because of the torch angle, try closer to 90deg. to the pipe/plate. Also long arcing will cause that. Try higher amperage and show the instructor how much better the weld looks, then tell him what you did different.  What do you mean by whipping out? weaving?Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:when walking the cup i held the rod dead center of the bevel and whipped the tungsten to the very edge of the bevel on the pipeQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G

Reply:1/8" filler is way to big Imo. I'd root it around 75 amps or so and cap around 85. Look up some of my post on stainless butt welds. This is what I do everyday brother.
Reply:You should practice rolling out before you start trying to do bottoms. Might get a better feel for it that way. It's not bad, you just need to put your time in.
Reply:as in rolling out do you mean 1G ? if so i cant we can only weld 5 and 6G and showdog copy that will do drf255 yeah lol ive had that damn thing since i was 18 im just waiting for the day when i get shocked from the welder should be a fun timeQuote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
