Reply:OK let's get the terminology straight to start with,B.S. = Bull ****M.S. = More Of the SAMEP.H.D. = Pile it Higher and DeeperI was forty when I returned to college for the first time in my life.  I have been a professional mechanic/machinist/fabricator/pilot all my life, beginning when I was around 7 or 8.  Basically grew up hanging out in shops and then working in them.  At your age school is a good thing.  What the counselors either don't know or elect not to tell you is the age cap on newly minted degrees.  I was 45 when I got my diploma ( I prefer to think of it as a pedigree).  Being #2 in my class meant the last semester came with several interviews for prospective companies looking to hire the "best and brightest".  They only had seen my academic record and knew nothing of my personal history until the interview and got a copy of my resume.  I was given the usual dinner interview at a nice hotel and some pleasant conversation but none of the prospective companies made an offer.  A very nice HR lady from a prime government contractor broke it down for me.  She told me after meeting me that although I was obviously a talented engineer, my age and experience level worked against me.  She was looking for a "dumb kid" that could be hired for little money and would take all the crap thrown at him/her.  At 45, she said they knew I was a plug and play deal but would expect more money than the entry level position being offered and that I wouldn't put up with the BS.  She did however make a couple of suggestions and even some phone calls on my behalf to head hunters that dealt in "contract" work.  A bachelors is within the realm of feasibility as is a masters.  The idea of a doctorate seems to be rather a reach unless you are career orientated toward laboratory research.  I've never heard of a doctorate welding program at all.  If there is such a thing, I almost assume it is an adjunct to a degree in metallurgy.  As for the CWI?  The young guy next door went to a 2 year welding program in Tulsa and returned home to a job in a large fab shop locally.  He welded for 2 years and was worked up as "management materiel" because he kept his mouth shut and head down.  Went to work every night.  They had a position open in the shop for a CWI and he was asked to fill it.  He worked under the supervision of a rated CWI for a couple of months and finally took his test seminar last June.  As a by product of his employment he is taking a few classes at the local college to get an associates degree in general studies because he needs a bit of refinement in his writing and math.  Whatever you, do do it now!  There really is such a thing as age discrimination.RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:thank you for the reply i just wish when my head was up my @$$ at age 18 some one would have kicked it back out for me i wasted a lot of time that could have been used in college learning .Quote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
Reply:Keep in mind how much you will have to pay to get that doctorate vs how much of a pay increase you can expect from having it. It doesn't always add up, I know a lot of people that come out of school with $50k plus in debts and have a hard time getting much use from their shiny framed degree on the wall.
Reply:Not saying you shouldn't get a degree but be smart about it and research what kind of work you will be doing after getting the degree you are interested in. Make sure it's going to benefit you enough to make it worth your while and know that a degree doesn't automatically mean you will be making big money right out of school.
Reply:i already owe 17 grand for what i got now i will have 2 degrees in welding technology in a few months . i just want to be in a place in life were i can have a employer look at my resume and say holy cow we need this guy he don't need us  .im sick and tired of being told that i don't have enough on the job experience even though i know i can perform the job to there standards plus some .or im told i have to much experience as far as my college goes to tell you the truth i would settle for 15 an hour for my first real welding job that's about the going hourly rate around here  .i don't see why i cant land a good welding job im drug free show up for work on time every day and hardly have a beer hard to find those quality's in a guy my age now .Quote Originally Posted by vwguy3  View PostHave you ever seen a cow that was welding overhead burst into flames my certs as of 1/29/14SMAW3G plate 2,4,6, 6Ghard wire and flux core 3GGTAW2,4,6 6G3G plate SS sch 80 6G
