Reply:Not bad. I see a lot of porosity in many of the welds though. Looking at the pict I'll put that down to poor prep vs bad gas coverage, but that might also be an issue. You need to clean your material better. A wire brush won't remove mill scale and rust, just make it shiny. A few of the beads look a bit on the wide side. There's not much else I can say not knowing your machine, wire size, voltage and wire speed, gas used, material thickness etc. The more we know, the better we can make suggestions to help you learn..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I really can't add much to critique the OP on this but the inevitable banter reminded me of a couple of incidents that happened in the past at my job.Job is mechanic in big truck/trailer freight shop. Got people of all skill levels working in the shop. Welding skills are very hard to detect in certain individuals here, mostly, welding skills are simply non-existent.The lack of welding skill does not deter some people and those create some humorous situations at times (humorous only to people who can weld). One of my co-workers told me that he was working in the bay next to one "not weldor" one day and noticed that the guy was burning a lot of rods on a task to mount a single lifting handle of 5/8" steel bar onto a dolly. That usually only takes maybe 1 to 1.5 of 1/8" electrode to complete. My friend said the guy had been "burning rods" for half an hour when he came over to my friend and asked him to "come look at my welding". My friend said that there were 2 "pyramids" of slag on the concrete floor beneath the ends of the handle and that there was an incredibly ugly deposit of stuff that looked like the work of a drug crazed mud dauber wasp all around each end of the handle. The guy further asked my friend if he thought it would hold. My friend walked over to the guy's toolbox and picked up a 3 pound hammer and smacked the handle. Handle bounced off the floor and skidded away. Friend told the guy to grind all that chit off and he would weld the handle on for him.The other incident involved same friend of mine where a different "not weldor" approached him and asked him to come see what's wrong with the welder (old Millermatic MIG). Friend walked over to the guy's bay and saw that there was about 25 feet of MIG wire (cut off pieces of 3' or so) lying all over the concrete shop floor. The part he wanted to weld was laying on top of the truck frame cat walk. My friend looked at the piece and saw no signs of welding and then he noticed that there was no ground clamp anywhere on the piece. He asked the "not weldor" Where is your ground? The guy pointed to the ground clamp lying on the concrete floor and said "I have it grounded".Have a nice day and be thankful you are not dealing with our "not weldors".

Reply:walkerweld years ago I was working at this place, they hired a girl who supposedly had all kinds of welding certs. The superintendent brought her over to me to be my new partner, told me to put her to work. I grabbed a pad eye told her to weld it in the center of this plate, and I would go cut some more material. 1/2-hour or so she came up to me and said something was wrong with the wire feeder. When I walked back to the plate where she was to weld this pad eye on, it looked like a porcupine crawled up on the plate and laid down! Reply:I'm gonna have to send my friend a link to this (he has since moved to a different employer). He will love the porcupine comment too. I always liked to hear his comment when he saw a good weld, "Looks like you got a pretty good "scald on it" there Walker."

Reply:Maxed out that machine will do 1/8" under real world conditions. 3/16" is really beyond what it can do well even on a dedicated 20 amp circuit..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
