Here i made use of a piece of 1/2 inch steel, 2x3 feet. I wanted to make a sattelite table that i could position anywhere in the shop to help work on longer pieces. It is made to be moveable and adjustable so i can make it level with my main table. My wife was pleased that i was making yet another table to clutter up the shop (she calls it the garage). I made a frame of 2x2 3/16 square steel tube on the ends, and 1 3/4 x 1/8 inch square steel tube for the sides. The legs are 2x2 x 3/16 steel tube also. I made table levelers with stainless 5/8 inch bolts (see my post "home made table levelers" from last week. I wanted it to be moveable so i put a set of casters extending from one end so if you lift it from the other end it can roll to your destination. Wheel barrow handles on the other end to make that all easy. I tigged the whole thing for tigging practice. Used er 312 for most of the welds. Reply:Good call on the gussets Paul, I'll do that this morning! My original thought was that if I need to lower that end the wheels might interfere. I thought I might be able to "adjust" them with a hammer but I don't think that will be necessary. Gussets are a great idea, thanks!Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:That's a pretty fancy saw horse.HammerFile Big Hammer------------------------------Here, let me Google that for you...
Reply:Nice with the handles low, so you dont have to hold it up when you move it. Just lift with your legs, and walk. Cool! X2 with the gussets. I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:On your fillet welds have you tried walking the cup? I have found the welds look much nicer and are easier to do. I unfortunately cant really show you the process and it's hard to explain. I'll see if I can find a vid on you tube. Other than that and the gussets needed. Reply:Here is a vid. Give it a shot on some scrap and see how it goes for ya. I find it really easy especially on a fillet joint.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
Reply:What is the make/model of the drill press?Last edited by RhymesWithBob; 04-16-2012 at 11:33 AM.
Reply:no big deal fab, thanks for the tip. I have seen it on welding tips and tricks, Jody does a few nice vids of that technique. I see him use it on pipe mostly, but maybe if i dont have a 1/4 plus stick-out on my tungsten i can give it a whirl. Would be nice to have the cup help keep me at the right distance away. I will try it.Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Thanks to the esposa! Finally got an O/A setup
Reply:Rhymes with bob, Mag drill is a MD 45. Bought it via amazon from a dealer on the west coast. I am very happy with it. I have set it up to act as a drill press. i copied a you tube video where the guy made a drill press stand for it. It is currently my go-to drill press for serious work. Very stout machine and seems to be a good alternative to the more expensive Milwaukee that i would have preferred. The budget is only so deep you know...!!!Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:NBD fab, i'll try that, i just ordered some of those sexy pyrex cups and a mini torch head for my tig machine from arc zone, i bet that will help me see the weld pool while i walk the cup. Let ya know how it works out, i'll post some pics. I love seeing others pics , gives me something to shoot for! Reply:I'll gladly post up pics. I just can't do it from home. (no Internet here only my phone) so once I get to work I'll post a pic of a root pass I did on some pipe the other day messing arround. And tomorrow at the shop I run a fillet and post a pic on wed morning for you.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
Reply:hey man i forgot to get back to you with pics. so here they are. there is pics are in the orentation of the weld. the once clamped to the tubing was run uphill in the vertical position the others were run horizontal. (one is a root pass on a 6in pipe) not my best work but i would say not too bad. being that i have been running tig for aprox 3 months.I have also included a pic of the stickout that i typically run. hope that it might help you a little. Reply:ok the first pic if you look close you can see the zig zag marks that the cup left on the base metal. ( i might be puting too much pressure on the cup) the 4th pic is actually suposed to be horizontal. dont know why the pic came out sideways. you really should try walking the cup it makes TIG easy. allthough you do not get the stacked dime look. that most people associate with TIG.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
Reply:Thanks NBD fab! Great post reply! THanks for the help , i love your welds they look very professional! I tried the cup walking thing today sort of. I tucked the tungsten in tighter and used the cup to ride the fillet. It was awsome! I will actually "walk" the cup next time. I cant wait to try it! I love learning how to weld better. I posted a project i did this weekend just now. It is called "gate build for spiral staircase" . I used the cup support method making the latch. I will give you credit for the latch welds. I know they are still pretty lame but i am making progress and having fun!Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:Cool man. I saw your thread, I'll have to look closer at the latch. I am still learning TIG myself. Making progress and having fun is the most important.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
Reply:Look again at the second latch pic. The moveable middle piece is leaning next to the welded part. See how the design allows the pin to knock it upwards then it comes down capturing the pin. It took a little trial and error but it works well.Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45!
