welder dont weld???

I have a Century powermate 70 MIG wire feed welder I just got today. I plugged it up and grounded it and when I went to work nothing happened but the wirefeed just pushed out wire when I squeezed the button. I can count on one hand the number of times I've fiddled around with welding so I didnt keep trying today. but would a bad ground cause such a thing to happen? or is the welder most likely broke?
Reply:If you have a good ground connection and still can't get an arc, test voltage (with a multimeter) between the gun tip and the ground clamp when you squeeze the MIG trigger.

Reply:Yes ground it to the car battery and open all the caps on the battery. Then you need to hold the gun pointed at the positive terminal of the battery and pull the trigger.  This procedure ensures that the next generation is smarter than the last.
