Not being a pipe welder by trade, and working union all my life. It's just not real healthy to get caught welding pipe by UA pipe welders! So I really don't know what is acceptable. This is 6-inch sch. 80 pipe, 5-G, the cap is 5/32-inch 6010. Is this tie in at 6-o'clock acceptable?I also included a picture at 12-o'clock. Reply:I dont know about the quality of the weld (looks good to me) but it sure is straight!!
Reply:6010 is always going to look a little rough to the unitiated, but it looks ok ! Try not to skip out of the puddle too much. Don't be afraid to "over fill" the top and sides- then "spray" on the cover pass with a few more amps.
Reply:I've always had a little trouble with overhead coming at me. No trouble at all going away from me. My depth perception isn't the best, I put my right eye out when I was 12, and started welding at 15. Started welding professionally at 17.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Examiners in test booths all have their own rules but IMHO if this weld was done on a boiler, pulp mill, or refinery job (uphill 6010?), I suspect that your foreman or quality control man would simply ask you to grind off the excess at 6 o'clock and overfill the crater at 12 o'clock and touch it with a grinder also.

One time I had the opportunity to get into the apprenticeship, but couldn't afford the cut in pay, you know how it is, with house, and car payments! So I just stuck it out doing structural. Now I have all the time in the world to play, kind of a bucket list thing.

It was a high of negative 25 during the day 3 days ago. Jan. and Feb are our colder months. If this project ever kicks off I'm sure pipe welding jobs wont be to hard to find for a while. Reply:I was taught to cap pipe welding uphill progression by using a boot lace weave. Basically drawing Z's and pausing at the corners/edges of z pattern. This technique gives a lot of control in out of position as it is created small puddles that all tie in together. And on my cap tie ins I weld like 1" over my existing weld but speed up at the same time.Local 83

Reply:The lace was done with rutile rods ( 6010/ 7010-A1) guys. We never saw a 7018 on the Gulf Coast until we got inside a refinery. CEP- Try it with a 6010 - it will lay on there nicely.Originally Posted by CEPNo I'm not a weld instructor. I'm a has been.Because pipe welders are the best. Everybody wants to be the best, right?

Reply:you can't butterfly lace with a 7018!I had a job in Freeport TX working for Fish Eng. building an offshore deck section way back in 1980. Old Mobil inspector on the job wanted everything with a butterfly lace, even the little bitty socket welds. What a pain in the butt.We used to flush the butt welds out, then run a stringer down the middle of the last filler, then put the lace cap over that, keeps the middle from coming out too flat. But it wasn't much fun trying to get a horizontal weld to look good.
