Reply:the last time I tested  that I had to pay was 150.00 out of Pittsburgh. See non distructive  testing in your area they should be able to quote and  setup a test. before spending the money know you are able to pass because it's 150.00 pass or fail.

Reply:When I first needed a cert in 2007 when I got back under the hood I looked around for a place that allowed me to grind on the test plate. I know I know Booo!!!    But if a guy is trying to get a job and is tight on money its an option.    At least he can show the cert make some money and build from there “I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:I've never been able to use a grinder on a smaw structural plate test. If you do a pressure pipe test, you will be allowed to use a grinder. What do you wish to do with your ticket? Reply:@ MetalMan23 - you intending to go 3/8" (certified up to 1/2" thickness) or 1" (unlimited thickness)?  Currently in the same boat as you, 'cept planned to go 3/8" based on the economics of acquiring test samples needed for the test.  Prob a bad move on my part.  Low-cost 1" mild steel is rather costly in my area.  3/8" and 1/4" plate & backing samples, on the other hand, are easy to rip as drops from local steel suppliers.  But as WeldorWes eludes to, 1" is the way to go.   One and done.  If decide to rip the unlimited, then will adopt a "train like fight" approach and burn rods exclusively on 1" plate.Planning to complete the AWS 3G test before Mar'14 and interested to hearing your attack plan Last edited by ManoKai; 12-16-2013 at 05:12 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Correction: the 3/8" thickness 3G test certifies welding on steel thickness of 1/8" to 3/4"."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
