HiI study electromechanical engineering and am studying for finals. One of the topics is the materials for welding. I understand that 316L is a better stainless steel than 304L for welding in case of salt corrosion. But why? Which component or what reaction is responsible for less corrosion?I hope someone can help me.kind regardsCathal
Reply:I think 316 has a higher molyb. content, i don't remember for sure and don't have my books with me at work.Last edited by SquirmyPug; 12-27-2013 at 09:00 AM.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:Molybdenum42.  With a melting point of 4753 deg F, injecting only 2% Moly into "304L" enhances the chloride corrosion resistance/pitting of the stainless steel.  The "L" in 316L denotes the carbon quantity is below 0.03%.  All austenetic stainless steels are derived from the 18-8 (Ni-Cr) class of alloys.  You'll find www.csidesigns.com/PDFs/SSSguide.pdf helpful as an engineer studying metals. Note:  316 and/or 316L are marginal for short-term service in seawater.  Stainless steels rely on a source of oxygen to maintain their passive {armoring} condition.  Inconel 625 with it's increased concentrations of Ni-Cr-Mo (~ 58-20-8) is a preferred alternative, albeit more $$, for long-term marine/harsh environments.Attached image included to illustrate there is a lot of magic to sweater.  Creating seawater is not easy...
