Cable ?

I have some 3/8" and 5/8" steel cable. The 3/8" is rated at 5000 psi break. Not sure at all of the 5/8". How quality of steel is cable? Can it be welded and with what rods? If it can be welded, how would I clean it? Some kind of solution; TSP, muratic acid? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:We use to weld it if we didn't have a Chinese finger when changing out boom wire, or multi-part load blocks. Just butted the ends together and welded them with 7018. Or open the ends up about a foot, cut every other stand out of each end, mate the two ends together and weld the strands to each other. Reply:Oh no, I'm not too stupid. I own three chokers that are professionally made. No, first is curiousity, secondly if like to make letters, mine and my wife's names. I have a 2" ring, bent by machine on the edge that's 4' dia. And I'd like to make these names and date of our marriage 40 years ago as a entrance sign on our property. I thought if I couldn't weld it into letters then I could get some 1/8" flat bar , make the letters on edge and weld the cable to the flat bar. Sound reasonable?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:If I made a jig for each letter, could the "cable" letters be soldered with 95/5 solder, cleaning the cable good then using c-flux during the soldering? The larger cable is very dirty. Might be difficult to clean well enough for soldering.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:Yea, I learn with a friend of mine in high school, 46 yrs. ago as we built galv. Gates for the farmers and ranchers. Found out it was as bad as hauling hay and picking cotton, or stomping cotton in the trailer. Just saying.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
