I have a brass incense burning statue that was a rough casting that I want to repair. The inside of the statue is suppose to burn incense, but the bottom has a couple of pin holes from the rough casting. I want to obviously patch these holes up if I can. I was thinking about using the tig with silicon bronze filler but I want the filler metal color to match the statue. So I was wondering if I could just use some brass rod instead of the silicon bronze? Has anyone done something like this before? I am looking to refurbish this statue so I want the repair to be un-noticeable. I have seen guys tig copper pipe with using regular copper wire as filler, and I was wondering If I could do the same with brass. I read up on it a bit and didnt find too much other than brass contains zinc so I need good ventalation and a respirator. I also read that I am suppose to weld brass (backwards), it some how helps with the zinc fumes...
Reply:JB Weld, and some paint. Proverbs 4:23My company welds.
Reply:Tig or oxy/acetylene. The chances of you making it unnoticeable??????????Find out what your parent metal is, exactly. Then your gonna have to use a filler that is as close to that as possible. It's not gonna be unnoticeable, you just don't want it to catch your eye when you first look at the piece. Practice on a spot that is on the underside. No telling what the casting consists of unless you were there when it was cast or you sent it to a lab. If this is a priceless artifact forget everything I just said. If you got it at the 5&dime and they have 10 more for a dollar just give it hell and use a GBH.Arcon Workhorse 300MSPowcon 400SMTPowcon SM400 x 2Powcon SM3001968 SA200 Redface1978 SA250 DieselMiller Super 32P FeederPre 1927 American 14" High Duty LatheK&T Milwaukee 2H Horizontal MillBryan

Reply:Brass does not weld well.  It has a very high zinc content that tends to boil out during welding and makes a mess of everything.  Silver solder would likely be your best bet.
Reply:Unless you've done this before, you'll loose your statue...Braze it with flux and silver solder.Miller Dynasty 200DXMiller Spectrum 250DMiller Millermatic 200Bunch of old blue dinosaurs....
Reply:Thanks, I am just going to leave the statue alone.... Don't want to permanently damage it. Im glad I asked.
Reply:If you want to color-match the parent metal, use standard brazing rod w/ flux and use oxy-acetylene. TIG does not work well with brass because of the zinc.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
