Had the chance to see almost a full solar eclipse tonight. Put the welding helmet on and had an awesome view. Went down the block and people were trying to see it through the box method, sunglasses (not smart), and other ways. I just took the helmet down the street and a lot of people were able to enjoy it.This pic isn't mine (as mine didn't turn out), but is what I saw through the helmet. Pretty cool. Last time I saw one I think was in first grade. Reply:Ditto! Used the #13 shade on the AD helmet plus #5 OA torch glasses. Still looked lots brighter than the pic. But the eclipse didn't get as full here as it was supposed to up north. (Grand Canyon)
Reply:I can remember doing the same thing during a solar eclipse in the mid 90's with my fixed shade hood..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:My AD hood wouldn't switch.
Reply:I was totally going to do that but we were completely socked in with clouds. Typically western Washington weather. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:JDH239I think you meant, when you said a full solar eclipse (tonight) you meant daytime veiwing, as Solar is daytime and Lunar means night time veiwing. We had a PERFECT viewing here in NV, and the welding helmets worked like a charm, except the auto one, could not get a picture to come out. Tia,Don

Reply:I had a front row seat about 20 miles north of the sweet spot in southern utah. Right at the apex of the eclipse, with the perfect ring, my auto dark couldn't make up it's mind, even at the most sensitive settings. Other than that, it was fun.
Reply:To make an AD helmet work in sunlight, simply take your hand or a piece of cardboard and wave it quickly in front of the mask while looking at the sun. Those helmets work by detecting the light cycles pulse of a super quick off-on-off-on motion etc..... The helmets don't need a full 60Hz to work. A slower cycle can work, which is why a waving hand back and forth in front of the helmet will darken your viewing. By quickly waving a piece of cardboard or your hand in front of the helmet's light sensor back n forth, the darkening feature "engages" (for a lack of better word). Your helmet's "shade" feature (again, lack of words) then kicks in to protect your eyes. You can test it with a light bulb too if you don't feel comfortable looking at the sun. Most 60hz light bulbs don't activate the auto darkening feature by simply looking at it. Generally one must use the hand or cardboard techique to get the effect . The cyclic rate needs to be slower to work perfectly.Last edited by SuperArc; 05-21-2012 at 05:46 PM.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller 625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:I just used one of the IR remotes from the house. Pointed it at the hood sensor and held down the TV button. I suppose any button would work."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
