MIG Wire Storage

I have a few rolls of different mig wire laying around in varying states of use and a couple were starting to get a little rusty so I had an idea to vacuum seal them with the food saver.  I searched and the closest I could find was a poster who wanted to vacuum seal some 7018 rod and a few posts mentioning putting desicant packs in with wire, so I decided to give it a try although I didn't have any desicant laying around, time will tell if it works. Reply:Dang, never thought of that prop, I have a 10 pound bag of rice sitting in the cabinet, I'll open them up tomorrow and throw some in.

Reply:It works, and is nothing new!  Many operating power plants (the ones I know of are all operating nuclear facilities) have gone to automated filler issue stations where they will issue all of their filler in vacuum sealed packaging, including stick electrode (except they're using the much pricier, commercial-grade vacuum packer and a specially designed 3M foil bag).  A lot of R&D went into verifying their hydrogen content remained low (concerns about the fact that they were opened from the original container and not held in an oven raised eyebrows), and the results were well, well below the permissible limits.  Some of the European suppliers also issue vacuum-sealed 5lbs rod packages, like the Lincoln Sahara packs.  They're very handy, especially when you don't have the power to run a portable rod caddy.
