Time to put the Uranis Model 100 (Version 2.0) bumper hitch on the road to start earning it's keep Installed the ball.................  Thing is like most balls, it doesn't tighten worth a crap, and eventually spins in the hole and wallows it out. Little hot glue, and it's ready to roll I can hear it now     You've ruined the molecular composition of the metal I, and about 90% of the people around here, do this as a matter of course.  It makes sense, and doesn't damage the ball in any way, except maybe at the flange where it's welded, which isn't the meat of the ball.We at Uranis have updated the owners manual for the Model 100 (Version 2.0) :  To avoid voiding your warranty, grease your balls.  Greasy balls are happy balls."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:No wonder you don't get any return customers. You're supposed to grease the shaft not the balls. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:AH now you gone and done it.  welded the ball.  it is going to fall off for sure.  I have several hitches that have welded balls, and I am still waiting for them to come off.Now to play devil's advocate.  If you would keep a good eye on your nuts your balls wouldn't get loose

Reply:Impact gun usually beats the spin and get her tight.Ive seen some balls come with 2 flats ground in the bottom flange of the ball so you have something to hold onto at the top without using a pipe wrench.

Reply:When I first glanced at the picture, I thought the grease on the ball was a bunch of weld beads. I'm like, "what did he do that for?". Reply:To secure hatch ball to tongue without welding:Use a pipe wrench on the ball flange or shank between the ball and the flange, hex wrench on the nut.  All surfaces must be clean and free of any paint or foreign material (no dust, dirt, grease, oil, rust, etc.)   Apply locktite (blue if you want to take it apart latrer using hand tools or red if you are prepared to use heat to get it off) to the male threads, install a lock washer between the nut and the bottom of the tongue.     Tighten the mofo per torque specs for the shaft diameter and thread pitch (NC or NF). The only ball I have had loosen up was one on a borrowed truck.   Unbeknownst to me some idiot had installed a ball having 3/4 shank through a 1" hole with no bushing.   100 miles later it was rattling around pretty good but I didn't loose the trailer, or the car that was on it.  -MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Yeah... I take it that Uranus has just O-fficially standardized the fleet's ball size, present and future.Speaking of the variety of hitch ball sizes out there, aren't there still a 1/16" or two variations of size that the industry hasn't covered yet?  Maybe it's time to start in on the Metric sizes. Reply:I once had a ball that the bolt when up into it not a shank on it, it worked it self loose and lost the trailer on the interstate one time, that was fun, never lost the ball it was secure in the hitch of the trailer and the safety chain (was designed to drop over the ball), so it worked well also, it went off the road and out on a sandy bar next to the road way, a guy with a 4x4 stopped and went out on the sand we hitched the trailer to his pickup and he parked it on the shoulder of the road  I took a bolt out of the hitch else where and put it back in, it was getting dark about that time and a officer showed up and said he had been informed there had been an accident,  I never hardly looked up and said the trailer came loose and it might have sparked as the jack touched the pavement but since the truck was up by the trailer and was all OK, he stood and held his light so I could finish up easily and  when done walked back to his car, (I also neglected to state I took out a mile marker post) you could see the green paint on the front of the stock trailer and a small indention where it took it out,  when I got home that ball went to scrap iron,  I do not know if it is good or bad, but I have been using the convert a ball http://www.convert-a-ball.com/ on that truck ever since and have not had problems, but I think some of it was taking off the 2 5/16" and put on the 2 inch and back and forth,  (also I had pulled a pined hitch and it may have egged and burred the hole a little not letting me get the ball tight and with a slight movement it rubbed the bur off and then loose,  and when that bolt dropped out so did the trailer (it was empty at the time),Last edited by Farmerboy; 05-23-2012 at 03:27 PM.

Reply:I can hear it now.  You've ruined the molecular composition of the metal.  Raise it back up to over 1600* F., then cool slowly for maximum toughness....or....Use a heat treat option; raise it back up to over 1600* F., then quench it rapidly.
