Hey everyone, been awhileI have a 316 SS valve that I need to weld. All I have at this moment is 308 SS tig rods. Can I use 308 ThanksMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:Can you? yes. Should you? depends on what the end use is; although you probably shouldn't. 316SS is for usually meant for high temp and/or more corrosive environments. Using the wrong filler will possibly compromise the corrosion resistance of the weld joint. It will not have matching mechanical properties to the 316 base metal in the valve or whatever is on the far side of the weld joint. At high temps, this could result in the weld failing when it should hold.If this is high pressure, a piping system that contains something hazardous, a weld critical to equipment operation, or the safety of you and your co-workers, get the correct filler metal.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector |
