grabed a mig for a weld test today at a job interview. i havent used a mig in a couple months so i was a little nervous. now my vertical down was good, but my problem came with a horizontal fillet weld. the toe looked good and the size of the bead was good but it had a ridge right down the middle. ive had this happen a couple times and havent figured out what causes it. so what gives. the setting was the same for both welds. the only thing i can think of is i might have been moving to fast.  oh, i did get the job. just need to get this problem figured out.
Reply:A bit of a razor back ridge down the middle can sometimes be the voltage is a tad high in relation to the wire feed speed."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Generally if the weld is high in the center, either you are running too hard of a drag angle or the voltage is too low.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:i fixed the problem.  it was a combination of traveling to fast and/or not enuff voltage. i turned up the voltage a little and really concontrated on keeping an even travel speed and the problem went away.  does any body else have problems when they switch to someone elses machine.i always have to figure out what settings to use. it never seems the same when you switch from one type/size to another.
Reply:Every machine is different, especially different brands. They all have there "feel". Set the wire speed for the thickness you are welding and then tune the voltage in. If you do the counting and measure trick for wire speed then you will get any machine to weld great with same thickness since not all machines have digital readouts.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week
