Reply:Too much heat and not enough filler..Pic 2You don't "Get" this overnight but the road is open so stand on it!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:And a frightening mug it is too. Reply:When I butt weld 11 Ga tubing (pic #2), I bevel to a point and add enough filler to have a raised bead. I do this so I get a full weld so my work is cow proof, but also so I can hit it with a flap disk to smooth it out.  "And erase those freeze lines!" Yes. Most of what I install, I try to make my welds hard to find and the parts easy to clean. It does look like a combination of too much heat (weld seems to sag into the tubing) and not enough filler. I have a bunch tig fingers as well. I find them helpful in stainless, but I almost couldn't do without them with aluminum.
Reply:I am going to get some bigger filler too.I did bevel slightly and was feeding as fast I could. I still have to work on the filler feeding with my left hand.I'll work on lower heat and more filler. Thanks for the tip.Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Less heat and you won't have to fill so fast. What are you building?
Reply:Hmmm, real men dont use heat shields.they just burn there hand...LOL..,,ok for a real question...with all that padding on your hand doesnt it affect being steady..its like a pillow with alot of movement when trying to keep placemnet of your hand?..Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Well, looks like a  lot of electrode "stickout" for that size cup and it doesn't appear to be a gas lens which would help. Keep stickout to a minimum when possible.  Still your enthusiasm and some patience will get you there pretty quickly. Thanks for sharing. Reply:Fexal  -  Try starting at the apex of the corner and weld inboard.  With your current weld direction your thermal gradient is widening and the metal section is getting narrower; this is why your puddle collapsed when terminating.  In addition, before you start, put a tack [and brush] at the terminus of the bead, and weld into it [experiment with size].  This increases your heat-sink and provides more control over the final look.  The only time I miter corners is when the final product has lose tolerances and distortion isn't a problem.  "Block and chip" is joint configuration that results in the least distortion. Search this forum for 'dhem, block & chip, 11/20/10, for pictorial example.   Opus
Reply:To Fexal: I just like your sig "Never weld more in the morning than you can grind off in the afternoon....."It just reminded me of when I was at the local community college, and right next to our shop was the welding class. I always told the new students when they asked about the noise "It's the grinding class. They teach you how to grind metal for 4 hours at a time and weld 5 minutes". Lol
