Here's a couple pictures from today's welding practice. nothing special, 90amp harbor freight welder with the junk wire that came with it.As you can tell by the amount of pictures, I'm quite proud of these welds. Feel criticize and post your practice welds.
Reply:I'm no expert, but they look decent to me.  What setup is this?  Are you using argon/co2 or is this flux core wire?  I noticed a huge difference once I switched from flux to gas and got the flow rate right.

Reply:Use what you have and keep at it. They look pretty good with a touch of undercut on one or two, but all things considered, I think they would hold. Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler

Reply:first tell us your setting on the welder? could be one of the following  A--turn up wire feed [add more filler B--slow down travel C-- turn down amps [ less heat i would vote -Aidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441
Reply:It could just be the slag I see on the welds. Here is a couple resources... http://isadikin.wordpress.com/2006/08/27/weld-defects/http://www.millerwelds.com/pdf/mig_handbook.pdfTypically it can be corrected by adjusting the angle of the electrode and possibly and adjustment of the ampreage. Take a look at these and see if that helps.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:those are the nicest welds i have seen come out of a HF welder.
Reply:Robert: You're right, they do have a bit of undercut. Thank you for the resources, I'll read through them tonight.Prop-Doctor: I can't even guess the amperage it was set to, nor the wire speed. The wire speed was on 6, and the amp's on High. I'm gonna look through the book on this welder and see if I can figure out approx- what amp's it was on. Thanks for the plausible causes!bp626indamix: Thanks, I've had a 90amp HF welder for a year now and just recently got it exchanged because of a burnt switch. they upgraded them quite a bit and I have to say, whatever they changed, Worked. this thing welds 10000x better even with junk wire. I would recommend one of these to anyone who needs a light (and I mean light) duty welder.is anyone else going to post some pictures?
Reply:Hey Jesse94,        Keep practicing you will get it. Slow down the wire will help on the balls. Try it and you will see. Change the angle of your gun will help the undercut. May want to turn the heat down a little bit, But your real close now looks close anyways. Try pull your welds not pushing them will also help undercut. Great job keep it up and you will be a pro.                                                  VernonLast edited by 1969 Vernon; 02-08-2011 at 11:27 PM.Homemade Belt Sander "LINK"http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/y...Belt%20Sander/
Reply:Thanks, if I slowed down the wire any more I would still be finishing these beads. I do need to practice keeping my angles right on my torch though. and I was dragging the bead. if there was one thing I could add to this welder it would be better control over the settings.all I have is a high/low switch, and a wire speed knob. it really sucks for trying to dial in the welder. but it works I guess. Thanks for the tips and tricks guys.
Reply:Normally I have found too much wire or too cold gives you splatter. Looks good.
Reply:I have a sample at home that I did last week. I'll post later tonight.
Reply:I forgot to mention to you guys, I've been welding for a little over a year now. (self taught with allot of help from 3-4 certified 15+ year welders) I got the 90amp flux wire welder for christmas last year and just recently got it exchanged because of a burnt switch (more my fault than the welder) and they upgraded them, allot. the new one I got weld's 100x better. Thanks oxygen454.
Reply:I also have a Harbor Freight 90 amp Flux core wire welder.  Works great.  Built a welding table with it.
Reply:Damn nice welds for a harbor freight welder.  I bet you could give zapster and sundown a run for their money!
Reply:I just replaced the little ground clam with a dose of overkill.  (Cost a dollar more than the next size down.)  Now we are welding!  Quite a bit better.lloyd.plywoodHF 90amp flux wire welderHobart 125 Mig/FluxHF 80amp inverter stick/tigSmith oxygen acetylene torch
