Has anyone come up with a welding enclosure to construct inside your garage?  I was thinking of building some knock-down-type of walls, and a ceiling, with a ventilator/blower and 8" hose duct outside, so the fumes, dirt, etc. are contained, and not dispersed everywhere. If you have done something along these lines, could you post a pic?thanks

Reply:Is there a practical way to suspend welding blankets from the garage door tracks.  It doesn't take much to pull the smoke and stuff out.  A squirrel cage blower with some sort of tubing would probably work.  This wouldn't be air tight but as long as there is a positive air flow thru the enclosure it could do the job.
Reply:Get Harbor freight welding blanket.  Put hooks in ceiling where grommets are.  Make temp walls and add fan as needed That what I do for mig and stick when I can't be outside.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:Like stated, get some harbor freight blankets and make a frame like these. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...eens&FORM=IGRE
Reply:OKWhat I've come up with is a 10'x20' FR tarp, which I intend to install snap fasters (like you have on boat covers).  Above the 40' long beam in my 24x40 garage, I will screw in the male snap studs so I can snap the tarp up to divide a section in the garage. Now, I only have a 12' wide end to cover, and I think I'll run a wood strip across the ceiling, and install snaps on that, too.  That will cordone off a 12' x 20' welding area for me.  Seemed to be the easiest solution, and I can take the tarps down to store them when not in use.Whadya think?
Reply:Myself, I'd lean towards light-gauge sheet. Aluminum or steel.Maybe Galvanized in 28 gauge or so, or maybe ribbed interior wall panels?Cheap; light weight;  zero risk of burning; durable, won't age; easy to clean. Can be nicely recycled or repurposed some day.If work will be in a dedicated spot under the door, maybe a three-walled fold-down suspended from the door tracks or ceiling, with "hood" and duct fan above?Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 01-06-2014 at 12:27 AM.
Reply:what about welding curtains on a frame? Those red/blue/green anti-flash curtains?  They won't block much light, so you won't feel like you are in a cage.  You can build the frames so they stack next to each other and take up very little space when not in use.  Then, get a welding fume extractor (the thing with the long duct to pull fumes away from the welder.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:Well, ultimately I came up with a process right now, where I have a 20' x 10' FR curtain, with a c-clamp at each end, running down the center of my garage suspended from the I-beam.  I have small spring clamps on the curtain, clamped to the I-beam about every 3 feet.  Then, I put my ventillator fan on top of a 4' stepladder, set up next to the cart that I use as my welding table.  With the ventillator on low speed, it sucks all fumes out and through the 8" flex-hose that I ran out under my garage door.  On High speed, the air movement, I think, is too strong and would affect the gas flow with the mig.  This MAY not be true, but it seemed to me that the low speed was the better situation in my case.Notwithstanding the rube-goldberg setup I came up with, NO FUMES or SMOKE got circulated to the other side of my garage, and you could not tell there had been welding going on, after the 2 hours of practice-welding I had done. This is my setup, until I get more sophisticated and maybe build some stands to hang the curtain.  Seems to me, as a part-time/DIY welding setup, this is quite sufficient for me, though.  There is more mess with the grinding/cleaning operations than there is with MIG welding with gas, easily, and I at least now am limiting the areas that need cleanup to 1/3 of what I previously had.thanks
