I had four of these Grey castings come in needing repaired I sent castweld a PM on here to see if my plan of attack would be feasible First picture is one of them as received I then put in a double V groove joint prep with a 1/16" root gap to bring them back into tolerance Then media blasted the castings to remove rust and the casting skin and other contaminants Then i put them in an oven for preheat to 550 F after i tacked them up used the oven so i would have uniform Heat soak on the partwelded them up using Ni55 with TIG making small beads and moving around the part to prevent the weld pulling the part and peening after each lil bead to relieve stresses with a mini needle scaler Attached ImagesLast edited by WeldorWes; 06-06-2012 at 11:41 PM.Miller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]
Reply:after they were welded up the parts then went immediately into an oven at 800 degrees F for postweld heat treat / slow cooling they stayed in the oven for almost 20 hours till room tempHit the parts with Dye penentrant to check for cracks had none Then Media blasted them again before they left the shop with a happy customer Attached ImagesMiller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]
Reply:I would suggest making "U" grooves for cast iron instead of "V" grooves when possible. There is less stress imparted in the metal with the "U" grooves per UTP.
Reply:Nice fix! I am always impressed with a good cast iron repair. Of all the work that comes through my shop, cast jobs are ALWAYS my least favorite. Thanks for taking the time to explain the whole process you used.
