Well a couple weeks ago my clutch cable snapped on my 1966 Mustang due to a crappy system. So I decided to go with Mustang Steve's quadrant system, rather than replace the cable on a crappy system. The new systems consists of welding a quadrant to the top of the stock 66 pedal, so that's what I did.I wanted to ask what you guys thought of the welds. I'm an amateur at best, with an ok welder at best, but I hope it was good enough. I grinded a big bevel on both sides to get a nice deep V since I have a 110V welder. Then I ran beads on either side (machine set to highest setting). I know this side looks bad, but it took time before it heated up and you can see the weld start to widen up towards the end (left side). So I ended up grinding this side out and making another pass while it was pretty hot and it came out better. This is the other side. What do you think? I'm not worried that it will break off. I'm quite confident it will hold. Also, I wanted to make my dad something for father's day, seeing as how I don't have much money. I saw the idea on here about making a brand for the BBQ. I can make it out of regular steel like this: http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ht=steak+brand But I have read that you should use stainless steel. Thoughts?
Reply:There's very little pressure on it, I wouldn't worry about it. If it breaks, you'll have fun floating gears and starting the vehicle in 1st gear. Stainless would last longer, but I'd venture to say 99% of them are mild steel. Sounds like a very thoughtful gift, and I'm sure he'll love it.Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
Reply:It's a bit cold, but probably not too bad.In the future you can preheat with a propane torch.  Even the little handyman propane torches will work for preheating small areas.  You'd be surprised at what a few hundred degrees preheat will do.  You'll see the difference immediately. If you're using a small machine sequence the welds almost immediately to keep the interpass temperature up there, this also helps."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:And whether you have a big or small welder, you always have to grind a bevel.  Prep work is the most important thing in welding, and it takes the most time."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
