Had the apprentice in today after school was let out for the summer..In 3! hrs. he knows..How to indicate stuff in a 4 jaw..How to cut and prep tungsten..How to turn and measure for shrink fitting..How to heat for shrink fit..How to pre heat before welding..4150 Shaft to mild steel heads..How to post heat after welding..How to properly clean metal for welding..How to set up the tig torch and what all the parts do..How to set up the positioner..How to shut down everything after all is done..How to tack...How to remove "Millscale"...I gave him his very first Brown and Sharp 0-1 Micrometer and told him to learn to read it..It has instructions in the box..Gave him a decimal chart and told him to learn them..EVERYTHING is in decimals...so....I have a job with 4150 shafting for the journals so I had him help shrink fit the parts and then watch while I welded the assy in the positioner..After that I had a tube to bore so I let him try to weld 2 pieces together after just running beads on flat stockLet him use my mask so he could see what a gold lens is like..Told him "I heard that" everytime the tungsten met the filler..For someone that NEVER had any seat time with a tig machine..He has what it takes..COMMON SENSE!!!He knew what I was going to do before I did it..He has a very bright future and I am glad to be of help..He goes on the clock come Monday but has volunteered to come by for the rest of the week to get in more learn time..Gotta love the ambition!Pics from today..More on this project as we go along..I get all the fun jobs......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:My son now 13 has been told this summer you will spent at least 4 bays a week with me. He is excited to learn he tells his sisters I'm going to learn everything so I can take dads business over. I wish I had someone to teach me like that when I was a kid. If we don't teach the youth who will? Zap I commend you for the dedication to pass "it" along
Reply:um, didnt want to say anything but, the I was thinking that the safety police will get you for no glove on the left hand.  Just sayun so the nay sayers arent all over your rear end.

Reply:Lets see how much of that info he learned today he retains.... I'm happy if by the 3rd or 4th class most students can remember how to set up and shut down the basic equipment at the tech school. Honestly it's good to see a youngster who is willing to learn. You hammered him with a ton of info today, if he retains even 1/3 of it he's doing good..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Good on both of ya. Zap for taking the time and effort to pass on his years of experience. And Stukas for having the desire and willingness to get his hands dirty and not just want to set at a computer all day. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:We need more guys to step up and pass on their knowledge.  I think we've all run into guys that wouldn't show you anything even if you paid them. It's also good you found a young person that wants to learn.Nice work, Tom

Reply:It's great to see good hard working kids. The kids today want everything handed to them .Oh, speaking of handing, why not give the kid a real pair of gloves.     I'm sure he appreciates your efforts and guidance. Nothing better then a pro sharing his knowledge and skill. When I was a apprentice 41 years ago learning stick there was a old guy that would stop welding as soon as he heard  my hood go down to watch. He would not let me watch. Others let me weld and taught me. Why not use the paper between lens trick ?Good luck to you both .

Reply:sometimes the brain will only remember what the butt can tolerate in one session, however being young, there should be a great deal more willingness to sit iin one spot for longer period of time.  And that being the case he should be a good student, and like others have said we can only wish we had teachers like that back then.
Reply:Congrats to both, very cool of you ZAP, and STUKAS it looks like your on the right path bud keep at it your in very good hands bud!   I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Zapster,God bless you for passing your skills on to this obviously eager young man. It reminds me of the "old man" Lyle Adney who took a clumsy but eager 14 year old under his wing and taught him how to weld and cut and grind, and cuss, and so many lessons about life and human nature that I will never forget.Regards,MarkLast edited by BorderBrewer; 06-19-2012 at 09:55 PM.MillerMatic 135Handler 210 w/ DP3035 SpoolgunLincoln AC-225Primeweld TIG225xEverlast Power Arc 200Weldcraft TIG rigSmith American Classic O/AEvolution Rage 2 SawTD Cutmaster 52Miller Thunderbolt with HF Box

Reply:It is nice to have a student that has both common sense and the drive to learn more.  As important as shop education is, keep him at the books so he will be able to manage the business side of the trade.  Math, writing and communications have a huge impact on getting a job. It's great that the two of you have gotten togetherDan D.
Reply:Dang Zap... he already knows more than I do... Congratulations to you both.Hope your student turns out better than this one.
Reply:I'm not sure I read what you are saying there... Are you suggesting Zap's insane skills come from the use of the Force, or that Zaps is leading his student down the road to the "Dark side"? .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Zap, Stukas, my hat's off to the both of you, the experience of learning the way you guys teach is precious, I should know, a lot of what I know was learned the same way. One thing you should teach them is how to open an account on this forum so that we can see the progress from their perspective and it's also a way for them to reinforce their knowledge by talking about what they're doing and creating dialogue. I'm sure the enthusiasm they show will hold the door open for others to pass their knowledge on to the new generation, kinda like you guys keeping the spirit of craftsmanship alive. Reply:Today was another good day in the land of Monarch..Had him just kinda follow me around and watch for awhile..I already had the tube bored on both ends so I showed him more shrink fit..This time it was the heads inside the tube..He got the fun job of heating 3/4" wall thickness tubing to red so I could install the heads that were machined .010 oversize..He watched as I machined the heads..Then it was on to the torch once again..After showing him sideways welding of the heads to the roller face I gave him a lesson on where to make new steady rest spots on the journal(s)..Face off the journals to length..Set up for turning then how to zero in the tailstock so the tube turns straight..I can't have even .001 taper end to end because this is a "Press Roller" that will be sent out and engraved then chrome plated so it has to be right the first time..The finish size is 5.500 +.001 -.000..Really gives me some leeway to play around with eh?So while the roller is turning and I just got him to set up and weld some straight beads this time to start on his rythem down..Crappy pic..OOPS!!Been there done that..Next!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:So while he is welding and the roller is turning this is what I do..Nothing.I don't watch every move he makes but he has this down pretty good..This is only 2 Hrs seat time..!While observing I did witness something that made me say "Allright!!!"He started the welder up..Got everything ready to go..Filler..Check!Tungstens..Check!Comfy?..Check..Then it happened..He actually hit the pedal..Put the torch to his ear and discovered he did not turn the gas on before just going at it and making a mess of the tungsten..You get a double cool for that.So all in all progress is much faster than I thought it would be..And he got gloves that fit!So until tomorrow.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Played hockey myself Zap!  For about 14yrs. Once I got too old for leagues and stuff I fell out of it, i'm a hands on guy, and like to be involved. Sad to say but don't even watch it anymore, but I feel it everyday. I was a wing, and had ballz of steel and fast, as short as I am, and even played defense. I don't talk about it much, but had alot to do with the person I am today!  I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
