I like to have my equipment be able to do more than just one thing. Makes me feel better to not have dedicated one job stuff hanging around. So it is with our JD 190 lawn tractor. This guy has a 54 inch wide mower deck on it and does a good job on the acre of lawn around the house. The bigger tractor does the other 14.5 acres.I have a 50 gallon sprayer that I built for the 50 hp tractor a while back but I don't like to use it for vegetation killer as it is the primary sprayer for fertilizer, etc.I tried using a 4 gallon back pack sprayer but it was a pain pumping the hand pump all the time and going around the fence lines for the whole property was another experience entirely. So I decided that when Northern Tool has a sale on 10 gallon sprayers at $59.95 that it was time to do something:There is an interesting little mounting system behind the seat on the lawn tractor for attaching a tool kit. The black inserts have two holes each. They are very hard plastic and the rods for the tool kit mount push into the 1/2 inch holes.I built a rear shelf out of 1 inch angle with expanded steel for a bottom. Underneath I mounted two 1/2 inch CRS bent rods that would simply slide into the mounting holes. This tray measures about 26 inches wide by 13 inches deep.I was a little worried that when the tank is full it will weight just over a hundred pounds which will definitely be too much weight for the plastic mounts behind the seat to bear. So I took some one inch flat about 2 1/2 inches long and machined in some 1/2 holes and welded them to the opposite side.I then bent a couple of 1/2 thin wall tubing ( I kinked them but they will still be strong enough for this application) and drilled holes in them for spring pins.continued on next post.Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:Ok, now it was time to deal with the lower supports.I looked at the back of the tractor and on the sides I had enough clearance to mount a couple of lower brackets for the support bars to attach to:I welded one on each side of the rear. Now it is just a matter of paint and assembly. The tank will sit on top and will be held in place by a couple of metal straps attached to clevis's. The wiring for the pump and switch will be routed underneath and come up into the engine compartment. Not sure if I want to modify the dash and add a switch yet. Will supply more pictures of the unit if anyone is interested......Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

Reply:Injured my back a week ago and have been laid up since I started this. However, went for a walk this morning and took a few more pix's.Tractor is parked in the barn and my wife spoils the barn cats:So it got a paint job, at least on the mounting stuff so you can see how it slides into the mounting holes:Bottom of the rods slide in and spring clips attached:Haven't finished the straps that secure the tank to the shelf yet, but I think this gives a good idea how it will look when completed:For the time being I'm using small ratchet straps but the final ones will be done in the next couple of weeks......More spraying to do, no more lugging the backpack around.Sure is nice to drive along the fence and hold the wand out and let the motorized pump provide the spray pressure.Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

Reply:Patent the design, then sell the design to John Deere and/or Northern Tools and retire to the Carribean somewhere. Don't know if you noticed yet, but between the first pics and last someone stole your trailer ball. I cut a piece of 1/4" plate and put two holes in it to bolt a hitch on my lawn tractors so I can pull a trailer with a ball or pull pin without having to change anything except the trailer. It uses the nut on the ball to hold it on. You can barely see it under the hitch in this photo, but you should be able to get the idea. No need to remove/replace ball to change what you are pulling. Now I might have to build me one of these racks for my JD mower. Attached Images

Reply:Now you need to build a pair of small folding booms for it and beef up the pump a little.  By the way... those little mounting holes on the back deck of the mower (there's also some up front someplace) are for the John Deere Sun shade.  It's just 4 springy tent-pole type sticks and a rectangular nylon cover.  They're also for the John Deere snow cab for the tractor.I think you've made much better use of it.

Reply:Thanks for the complements. It was kind of a fun build and has proven very useful.I don't need the boom spray attachment as I have a 50 hp four wheel drive with a 50 gallon sprayer on it for big stuff. I just use this little one to spot spray and go along fence lines.Bistineau:I like the mounting plate you did for your trailer. I'll have to duplicate it if you don't mind. It solves a problem I have now.Next project for the JD is a front bumper. My wife keeps hitting the pipe fences and the plastic grill is broken now. Plus, I have a HF crane in the barn that I use to lift the mower for servicing the deck and now I have to remove the hood in order to lift it. With the bumper on I won't have to remove the hood.I'll do another post as soon as I start that. Right now I'm rebuilding a Johnson Model J horizontal saw that I will use the cut the parts for the bumper.Cheers.Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
